This year has SUCKED.

March is when I start gearing up for fishing season, but so far, haven't been fishing once this year.

Last year, I had some lower abdomen issues such as pain, bloating, cramps etc, so I went to see my Dr and she said it was probably Colitis which is -
Colitis is inflammation of the colon, or large intestine. It can be caused by various factors, including infections, autoimmune conditions, inadequate blood flow, and even certain medications.
After some anti biotics and nausea meds it cleared up, everything was fine and life went on.

Fast forward to March of this year and I started having some mild pain in my lower abdomen. Just gas or something I ate I thought. No, this kept getting worse over the next couple of weeks and in the middle of the night, I ended up in the E.R. The Doc siad Colitis again and that it may be chronic, just flaring up on occasion. Anti biotics and nausea meds again, but this time it didn't get better. In fact it got worse and worse. SEVERE stabbing pains, nausea, diarrhea, etc till there was nothing left. Another midnight trip to the ER and they did a CT scan and STILL diagnosed Colits.

2 days later I was at the end of my rope. Over the 3 months this had been going on, I'd lost 25 lbs because I couldn't keep anything down and my stomach was so distended I looked 8 months pregnant. They did a Colonoscopy and the probe wouldn't fit. My lower colon was smaller than a pencil. More tests and I mean they did them Right Now no waiting.

Flash back....On ATS I posted about having prostate cancer a couple years ago and after surgery to remove the prostate, I had radiation therapy.

The radiation had been slowly killing my colon over the last 2 years. So, emergency surgery to remove 18 inches of my lower colon and a colostomy bag, which I still have but Doc said it's temporary, probably reverse it in November. While they were in there, my bowel ruptured and spilled fecal matter into the body cavity and after 2 weeks in the hospital and some serious anti biotics, I came home. Weak as a kitten, 30 lbs under weight and still no appetite. In the hospital I'd been fed by an IV because I just couldn't eat without throwing up. Got out of the hospital June 1st, but still on serious anti biotics. I had a PICC line in my arm and had to go to the hospital every day for 2 weeks to get IV anti biotics.
When I had gotten out of the hospital I noticed my right leg kept hurting if I walked more than about 100 ft. I thought 'Meh, it'll get better when as I get better "
The pain kept getting worse and I was getting short of breath just walking 100 ft.

Well, my toes turned blue and my Wife took me to the ER. Went for a Doppler of my leg, thigh and hip and Lo and Behold !! my femoral artery is almost completely blocked. Guess who is the culprit. It's not bacon or biscuits and gravy.

Radiation got that too.
So now that I'm semi back on my feet,{ still 20 lbs underweight and get tired really easy } I need another surgery to get that fixed and it's not as simple as a balloon to clear it or a stint. They have to go into my lower right abdomen to the deep part of the artery and do a graft or just cut out the blocked area and sew the ends back together. Waiting on a call back from my Vascular Surgeon to set the date.

Like I said, this year sucks.

Yeah ... I'd say that sucks.

Ours has sucked too.  Not as bad as yours though.

My husband had bladder cancer and now is having symptoms of prostate cancer so he's got tests next week and the week after.   He's also got Parkinsons and is having cognitive issues.    We have a bunch of other things going on as well.  It's all stressful.

Your story is now making me even more uptight.   I didn't know prostate radiation treatment can kill the intestines/colon etc etc.    UGH.

I wouldn't get too upset about the prostate cancer. Caught early it's easily curable. Mine was far advanced because my dumbass didn't get a prostate exam or PSA for 20 years.

It seems like some mild to moderate incompetence here with the doctors involved! Was it never colitis? Was always your colon dying from the radiation?! Is that rare? Is that why they didn't suspect it at first even knowing your medical history?

This sounds like a nightmare! I hope you get through your surgery fine with no ill effects afterwards.

Radiation enteritis very closely mimics the symptoms of Colitis till it gets to a certain point. After that, the bowel is dead or dying and surgery is needed.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond...c-20355409
Quote:Radiation enteritis is inflammation of the intestines that occurs after radiation therapy.
Radiation enteritis causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps in people receiving radiation aimed at the abdomen, pelvis or rectum. It's most common in people receiving radiation therapy for cancer in the abdomen and pelvic areas.
For most people, radiation enteritis is temporary, with inflammation usually subsiding several weeks after treatment ends. But for some, radiation enteritis may continue long after radiation therapy ends or may develop months or years after treatment.
Chronic radiation enteritis can cause complications such as anemia, diarrhea or bowel obstruction.
Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms until the inflammation heals. In severe cases, tube feeding or surgery to remove sections of the intestine may be necessary.

I should probably add that even after surgery to remove the prostate, the cancer had spread to some lymph nodes in my pelvis and they treated it very aggressively to stop it from spreading. Radiation treatment 5 days a week for 8 weeks. I was getting a pretty hefty dose and for the longest time, I was symptom free. No cancer, no side effects of radiation, I thought that was the end of it and Life would go on as normal. It was 2 years after my last treatment that symptoms first appeared.

There are various doctors on Youtube touting fasting for cancer.  If a person were having a hard time holding food down then they might resort to sugar, but sugar feeds cancer.  Autophages are said to be able to destroy some forms of cancer, I don't know which.

I am hoping everyone on here is responsible enough to thoroughly research and to look for several sources who are real MDs, and to talk it over with their own doctors to ensure nothing they try conflicts with some other treatment.

Maybe there's some carbless form of whey isolate?  Maybe bulletproof coffee would help keep weight up without carbs?

@ David64 - So sorry to hear of your health issues, that sucks.  Hopefully, they can get you patched up so things begin working as they should.  Those fish will be waiting for you.

@ Flyers Fan - Sorry about your family's issues as well.  It sucks getting older.  I'm turning 65 in a few months and I can certainly feel the age effects creeping in.  No major problems yet but if I enable slowing down it will have compounding effects.  So I've decided to retire fully from hourly employment and start doing the things I really want to do.  I'm choosing to live the life I've spent my whole life building for myself.  I've been working too hard to create it and I don't want it to go to waste.  Of course, I now realize I could have been enjoying life a bit more and working less; I'm not sure how much of a difference it would've made, but it is what it is.

I wish I could give some solid medical advice for you both but I can't.  And I don't want to be 'that' internet medical 'expert'.  I do know that eating the best possible foods with limited chemicals, additives, and sugars is inherently better for you.  So make sure your diet is the best it can be to give your body a better chance at overcoming adversity, so you can heal and get better.  And if possible, get more expert opinions if in doubt of your progress or procedures.
