Over the last hour or so, Cloudflare has been down off and on and I've lost connection with D.I.

I was just reading about what caused it and Cloudflare said they saw "unusual traffic" Not an unusual amount of traffic, just unusual traffic. I'm not all that computer savvy, so what does that mean ?
Is someone(s) testing the system to see if they can bring it down ? Or was it just a software glitch ?

Quite a few sites, such as X, ChatGPT and DI of course are used by people to keep in touch and updated on the goings on in the world, so bringing it down could cause some minor chaos.

This is a little worrying, but according to TunaTops in the comments for this story, PADS (Personnel Access Data System) a background check site for nuclear plants is also impacted by the Cloudflare outage. This means that visitor access to their respective nuclear plant is currently not available.
 
PADS is software used in the US commercial nuclear industry to manage access authorization for workers. This includes tracking their fitness for duty and training. Only authorized personnel, who have cleared background checks and completed training have access to nuclear power facilities.
 
PADS has nothing to do with running the nuclear power station, but it does impact who is working there. But dear reader, there is nothing to worry about.

Maybe they need AI to do the troubleshooting, considering the recent thread on the advancement of AI hacking abilities.

I sometimes wish I could take a blue pill and unknow my dependence upon the internet and how I am tethered to civilization by my phone.   When I was a savage without these things, life was simpler and more honest.

Well I grew up not tethered to the internet, so I will be able to transition quite easily back to that place.

Only Dick Tracy had a mobile phone when I was a kid, and that was science fiction.   There is no privacy, thanks to google and various governmental intrusions.    There are such a complex layering of software and platforms such as CloudFlare et al that the average human being has no possibility of safely navigating through the technological geography.    Oh, but wait, AI is coming.   We'll all be saved then, probably in a little gel-filled sac in a museum exhibit.

ETA:   I wonder if your transition back to the quiet place will be as easy as you imagine.   Think about staying off the internet for just one week.    I'm not throwing down a challenge, just a thought experiment.   Where I live, we had a terrible hurricane a decade or so ago.   We were without conventional power for three months.   I found that I felt both free, and also in withdrawl, and when we finally got internet back, I was very withdrawn from it.

Upside. Less internet = more time for introspection and reading.  Forced (brain will say so) real socialisation with like minds.  
Downside. less communication with like minds in other countries, and less boots on the ground information outside of my town.

Yeah, this AI revolution doesn't look promising what with it's hallucinating and all. But, hey, we humans have lots of experience in dealing with or understanding hallucinations and maybe will be able to talk AI down or convince it what is real and what is not real. 

ClouFlare needs to upgrade and I mean in a serious way. Fight fire with fire.
