Then you put is in a large skillet and cook it again but you scramble an egg or two in with it...it is sooo good with cornbread! Its why I asked... We always had collards, which had to be boiled cause they were tough and bitter as hell. I'd heard a granny or aunt talk about what I thought was called Poke Salad not Poke Sallet but I never knew how it was prepared I did not know they were poisonous. https://www.mountsinai.org/health-librar...-poisoning FWIW thats kind of crazy, it shows how desperate things must have gotten at some point, for people to eat it and to have recipes. If nothing else having to boil and rinse and then sautee, atleast spinach and cabbage you can wilt immediately Quote:All parts of the Pokeweed plant are toxic to humans. The highest amounts of poison are found in the roots, leaves, and stems. Small amounts are in the fruit. We had fried bologna sandwiches all the time except with mayo and sometimes a slice of cheese, LOL you had to slice them halfway through so they would lie flat. But hell we had fried bologna for breakfast sometimes too with scrambled eggs and biscuits. Fried Spam, fried Red Hots too Here's one that I didn't learn about till I was in my 20's, my ex-wife's family had them all the time and they were good as hell. I'd have one today if I had all the ingredients Sliced white bread, peanut butter, pineapple slice, sliced onion( preferably Vidalia) slice of boiled ham, and mayonnaise, with a few Wise potato chips and a glass of milk it is so good, and it's even better grilled. Didn't Elvis eat grilled peanut butter sandwiches with bacon and bananas?

Sometimes we had biscuits instead of toast almost like a breakfast bowl. Hell Stouffers used to do the microwavable or boil in bag Creamed Chipped beef, it was just never as good as Mom's (05-28-2024, 01:24 PM)AccessDenied Wrote: I will do peanut butter and banana, or sliced onion and cheese...but only pineapple on pizza... I'll eat a sliced onion or a sliced tomato sandwich all the time with just a little Duke's mayo. Of course, nowadays they have designer mayo's there's s bacon siracha mayo I have got to try. I'll eat pineapple ham or bacon pizza I just don't crave it, like I do other pizza combos.

My father loved SOS... but no one else in the family did. Something about the name. As a kid, I never knew it was not really called "Shit on a Shingle" everywhere.... led to some embarrassing moments.

We never used the stalk and mother boiled the leaves for hours then drained the poison. Then rinse them and then cooked them again in a skillet with eggs. I was so good. I also like collards with cornbread, black eyed peas, and salt meat! Yes um I know they are the same thing now,LOL but at the time I was a little kid half listening and visiting Granny I never knew there was a "Sallet" till young adulthood Elvis and Tony Joe White never sang about Poke "Sallet" Annie I could live off Blackeyed Peas jalapeno cornbread and a 1/4 onion. It is so good and filling and you can add different layers of flavor. Sriracha or Napalm Jam, bacon crumbles, chopped onions, cilantro. Here's another bean or pea I get confused on, we called them Crowder peas but are those just Field peas and different altogether? Granny's field peas seem a little smaller than the crowder peas Mom made. But they all were still so damn good. As long as they aren't Lima beans and if they are prepared properly, I can eat a mess of beans or peas.
