The left predictably applies the stock trope of comparing the right to National Socialism but they are modeling the wrong war.
A better model would be early 1840s America.
Like Lincoln did 20 years on, Trump is pushing it a little. If the agent couldn't just get out of the way of Renee Good, and if they needed to pressure Tracee Mergen to resign, they should be more up front with their reasons. However, they are mostly following the law.

In the 1830s and 40s, people may have come to the South looking to establish their own nation. They may have bought up as much Indian land as they could by spending their food security money and borrowing from friends and neighbors, perhaps with some sort of investment-type agreement. 1848 may have been a year of political upheaval throughout Europe partially because some sort of real estate bubble burst which had been created by Europeans buying the land of the Southeast USA.
Food security money may have been spent on going to America or investing in those going to America, and people may have been loath to help their neighbors who had blown their food security buying advantages. Perhaps the remark was often heard to tell your cousins to sell their Indian land?
Irresponsible land purchasers may have blown some of their cash going to California to seek gold. Ironically, they got a pretty good state without wealthy planters trying to force them out. The Gold Rush may have delayed the plans which may have been already made to strike and to take the Southeast by spending part of the war chest and sending manpower out West where they were out of the war.
The war didn't work out for them but they largely remained in possession of the South.
It may be that groups from elsewhere hope to create enclaves where their people can make the rules work the way they want and to keep unsympathetic newcomers out by simply not cooperating in order so that their people could be in charge.
They almost certainly don't want another Civil War. They may simply want to model the present former Confederacy.
Limited, vetted immigration made this country great. Large numbers of people coming in at one time and not assimilating may lead to enclaves of people who want to run a community based on ethnofascism which may lead to it becoming an aid-dependent economic wasteland.
There is a chance JFK's and McCain's powerful fathers did not protect them from naval review boards. Suppose there was a grassroots gang among the sailors which refused to cooperate. Suppose the favor they obtained in return was that JFK appoint a Southern war hawk as his VP, and suppose McCain may have been obliged to not vet evidence of WMDs in Iraq? Hillary was also a war supporter early on, and has deep political roots in Chicago, which has acquired Southern sympathies since the USCWar. The president at the time definitely had deep Southern ties and may have deliberately prolonged the occupation by releasing the surrendered Iraqi army, some of whom are said to have participated in the Insurrection.
Are we going to create more economically depressed ethnofascist enclaves which use their political clout to obtain government pork by doing things like starting wars?
