I've just noticed your interesting, engaging and well thought out OP for the first time. I've only got half way through the replies but I just wanted to write in support of your efforts and sympathise deeply with the half-witted responses you've received in your considered attempt to bring a relevant piece of discussion to the table. Reading comprehension and focused  attention really do seem to be diminishing in the Internet era, and you're right: people are clearly triggered by what I would call 'lower level consciousness' survival responses and are prone to 'lash out' in defence of their own POV. 

At no time in your OP did I get any sense that you did not include yourself in recognising the potential for perceptual error on your own behalf: indeed, the fact that as you say, the time and effort you take to formulate a post, even to the extent of checking and double-checking several times, rather implies that.
