Giacometti's "Le Nez". $78 million dollars. Can anyone explain this to me?

Rich people are insane and need to own things to show how rich they are?

Alberto Giacometti is the most sought after sculptor on earth. Even if it's just a blob of crap suspended by wires.

It's like owning a Picasso, or even certain Jasper Johns works.

The still alive artist rivals the most expensive artists in history, like Monet.  He just made collages of things like flags and maps and painted over it.  But no one ever did that before, so the originality made him valuable while living.

"Flag" sold at a secret auction for 110 million in 2010, or 159 million when adjusted for today.

It's funny looking at his recent sale prices. One painting of the number 3 is worth 1.5 to 2.5 million, a different painting of the number 3 sold for a little over $10,000.

And this only sold for about $750.

He could probably test his printer and it would sell for $500 minimum..

some of those are really nice and i like them! the flag painting over the collage is neat idea and zoom in (thanks for providing hires) interesting. yes probably overpriced those but some i wouldn't mind buying. a bit overtechnical upownass but that is artist prerogative haha and i'm no expert.

but noselump what up there ugly can anyone explain message or aesthetic? or is it antiart grotesquery which is a thing too i guess but it simply doesn't look well done not even yuk but meh.

Modern art is dreadful. It is produced by those who have no talent for those that have no taste.

AI 'art' is pretty much the same.

There's no need for message, art is just something an artist makes just because they want.

If some idiot wants to pay millions for it that's their problem.
