Propaganda destroy films, and the ability for people to think for themselves.
I've thought several times about this comment since you posted it.
I'm wondering if there is a grim truth about "entertainment".
You mention the desire for something without agenda, propaganda, deeper layers—simply entertaining.
But everything has deeper layers. Nothing is 'surfacy'. Or rather, everything that is simply 'surfacy' has hidden depths. Distractions from truths.
It's what we want. It's what the best fictionalists do. Make us forget. Or not notice. Merely "entertain".
And I'm wonder is everything like that? Is the entertainment that we're offered all veils of various truths? Not as a secret coordinated agenda, really (although I suspect the most successful fictionalists understand this), but as a part of the human experience, semiotically fundamental?
When we 'escape' to unwind, not think about the troubles of the world, are we really just stacking up layers and detritus that our future selves will need to clear away? Or do only certain personality types do that?
