Martial law declared by the South Korean President
South Korea president declares emergency martial law, warns of "communist forces
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/south-korea...emergency/
Quote:
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an "emergency martial law" Tuesday, accusing the country's opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with North Korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities.
"To safeguard a liberal South Korea from the threats posed by North Korea's communist forces and to eliminate anti-state elements... I hereby declare emergency martial law," Yoon said in a live televised address to the nation.
"With no regard for the livelihoods of the people, the opposition party has paralyzed governance solely for the sake of impeachments, special investigations, and shielding their leader from justice," he added.
South Korea's National Assembly was sealed Tuesday after Yoon's declaration, the country's Yonhap news agency reported. Helicopters were seen landing on the roof of the building in Seoul, in live television footage aired by broadcasters

Quote:Parliament votes to block martial law
South Korea's parliament has approved, with 190 of its 300 members present, a motion calling for the lifting of martial law introduced by South Korean President Yoon. Under South Korean law, the government must lift martial law if a majority of the National Assembly requests it in a vote. The martial law command is also prohibited from arresting lawmakers.
So, technically, it should be over.

My heart aches for the Korean people.
In their paradigm of governance, their leaders seem to be comfortable with making declarations about their own citizens being " anti-state forces."
It rings harmonically with the phrase "threat to democracy" recently evoked by one party about another here in our country.
The principle difference being that the Korean leadership 'bought in" to their own hyperbole, and wants to invoke "military" intervention within their own country.
I visited South Korea during their last bout of "martial law" when President Park was assassinated.
The people responded well enough, and there wasn't much strife over restrictions that were pretty much limited to a mandatory curfew...
Let's hope reason prevails, and they might see this as a difference of political opinion, rather than an existential threat.

Gotta say, didn't have "Communist South Korean Coup" on my bingo card today. I didn't even realize there was a growing communist opposition threat.
Luckily, they have a Westernized society.

Quote:SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late Tuesday, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against an opposition that controls the country’s parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea.
Hours later, parliament voted to lift the declaration, with the National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that lawmakers “will protect democracy with the people.” Woo called for police and military personnel to withdraw from the Assembly’s grounds...
...Under South Korean law, martial law can be lifted with a majority vote in the parliament, where the opposition Democratic Party holds a majority.
Soon after the declaration, the National Assembly speaker called on his YouTube channel for all lawmakers to gather at the Assembly building. He urged military and law enforcement personnel to “remain calm and hold their positions.
All 190 lawmakers who participated in the vote supported the lifting of martial law. Television footage showed soldiers who had been stationed at parliament leaving the site after the vote.
Still, I'm worried for my secret obsession with K-Pop should the alleged North Korean sympathizers ever influence South Korean society.
What's kinda humorous is their "Communist leaning democrats" also do nothing but try to impeach the mean opposition for being against their social change.
It is looking like left-leaning political parties everywhere are just programmed to go cry in the assistant principal's office and try to get the other kids in trouble for being mean.
I gather the The Conservative Peoples Power Party is like a South Korean MAGA.
I think we may have broken the world.

Im not sure but according to the CIA World Book 2021 South Korean political parties sound like James McAvoy in Split not to mention wonder which ones THEY sponsor themselves.
No doubt living with North Korea in your backyard can lead to paranoid delusions with a smattering of prudent discoveries that are completely independent of MAGA.
In some circles, South Koreans aren't happy with how chummy Trump seems to be Kim Jong Un not sure if we can stuff every international government into the current American socio/political pendulum swing towards orange and not blue or red

Quote:South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law starting at 11 p.m. local time Tuesday. The law contained six mandates, with alleged violations resulting in arrest, detention and search or seizure without a warrant. Here’s what the official orders say:- All political activities — including those of the legislature, the National Assembly — are prohibited.
- Any act that “attempts to overthrow the liberal democratic system is prohibited.” “Fake news, manipulation of public opinion and false propaganda” are also prohibited.
- The news media is “under martial law control.”
- Strikes, work stoppages and protests that “incite social unrest” are prohibited.
- Medical workers on strike have 48 hours to return to work or face punishment.
- The law also states, vaguely, that “measures will be taken to minimize inconvenience in the daily lives of good citizens, excluding antistate forces and other forces that seek to overthrow the system.”

Yep, he's probably trying to figure out how to address this and not lose face.
In the meantime, the Military have had enough and are leaving the National Assembly...
Quote:Martial law troops begin to withdraw from parliament building
It is just after 2am local time in Seoul and CNN is reporting troops are beginning to withdraw from the main parliamentary building, following a unanimous vote by lawmakers in South Korea to block the president’s martial law decree.
Soldiers entered the building not long after the president’s declaration of martial law on Tuesday.
The speaker of the National Assembly also reportedly just stated that South Korean troops are leaving the parliament building, according to the BBC, which cited the Yonhap news agency.
The local Korean newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, is also reporting that some forces are still waiting within the National Assembly grounds, although some appear to have set down their gear, according to CNN

@SunWillRise2024
The “Democratic Party” of South Korea went too far. Yoon accused the opposition of “paralyzing the courts in the country by threatening the judges and impeaching prosecutors, and by attempting to remove the Interior Minister, top broadcasting regulator, chief of the Board of Audit and Inspection, and the Defense Minister.” Yoon also said the opposition’s move to cut $2.8 billion from the $483 billion 2025 national budget was a scheme to paralyze his government. The opposition wants to deny extra spending for the presidential office, prosecutors, and police requested in Yoon’s budget. The president’s supporters say one reason for these cuts is to undermine court cases against opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, who was convicted of election law violations last month. Yoon referred to the National Assembly, where Lee’s Democratic Party holds 170 out of 300 seats, as a “hotbed of criminals” in his declaration of martial law. h/t
