'Being Offended' Thread.

I find that a bit ironic in a topic about being offended.

As a moderator, I'm obliged to point out a few important things...
But I'm also taking a risk.... While "offense" may be the topic... personal offense is not the stuff of account termination.
And we adhere to a tradition... don't speak of moderator actions outside of a conversation with the specific member involved... it's no one else's business.

As an operating rule, we don't discuss such things about individual members... we don't want to expend even an ounce of energy on those who no longer are part of the community.  We don't discuss staff actions about members with anyone other than the actual affected member... for our own privacy and protection as well as theirs... it also leave as a possibility, a reconciliation, or course correction, if one should actually be possible.

Here's my risky point

Account terminations happen.
Many refer to it as banning, but that is a word that connotes someone outside the member imposing a restriction... that is not, in any of my experiences, how it happens.  It's usually a matter of deliberate abandonment... members intentionally and persistently refusing to adhere to, or comply with, the standards we as a community have established.

Most frequently, it is a matter of an insistent refusal to comply with the terms and conditions of the site.
Often, it is a member who stands on pride and behaves with intransigence over their perceived "rights" and what is their "due."
Occasionally, it is a member who will simply not cease and desist errant behavior... as a matter of chosen self-expression.
Sometimes, it is a misunderstanding about what the T&C's actually mean.  (It's not click and forget like other places.)
Rarely, it is about the members' defiant or antagonistic abuse expressed in refusal to comply with requests to post within the T&C.

I am going to get in trouble over this post... I know it...
None of what I have posted is specifically relevant to your observations... it just speaks to your posted words...

... yeah... I'm going to have to answer for this...  but it's cool.  I'll get by.

yes it is cool but i was going to reply to the op about how mr hitchens drunkensmug cleverness i find to be somewhat increasingly annoying with age, but it is very difficult to follow your post without on reread anything i say seeming like sly allusion to forumdrama, which it is not, so i will just do a youtube search for 'offensive humor' and post this video sight unseen (somewhat risky) and do a great reset of context as it were:

eta this is video game streamer content, and some is actually funny off the cuff humor like the kind comedians cant do on stage any more.

its interesting that the video game stream community seems to be a little bubble where the rules of what is offensive are different and more lax. why is this? is it something that society decided is okay, or is it that humor will always find a way, like a primal force?

I don't get it... why can't people ever seem to understand that it is funny because it's not meant as offensive, it's meant to be shocking!
If it were delivered to offend it would be hate speech.

Comedy 101.
The laughing is what saves it from that dark characterization... unless you can manifest telepathy and determine the laughter is of evil intent...

By the by, I opt to take you more seriously than just your distinctive style of delivery...  I consider your posting style "artful."  Just sayin'

PS - I'm watching the video now and laughing my ass off... but some of the jokes are just "ouch!" funny... know what I mean?  The chosen context of the listener matters there... which, I suppose, is why some jokes, I just don't "get."

There's a lot I still don't "get"... but all things change eventually.

Some great replies there and I salute them. Beer

Seems to me 'courting victimhood' (and people becoming hysterical over 'words') has become a national sport these days and can't help feeling that it has something to do with this.. especially in the UK.

Whatever the case political ideologues labelling everything they don't like 'fascist' or 'hateful' is incredibly irresponsible and detracts from genuine examples of both.

John Cleese drops a few fair points here lol.

I believe that the horrifying deterioration in the ethical conduct of people today stems from the mechanization and dehumanization of our lives. A disastrous by-product of the development of the scientific and technical mentality. We are guilty. Man grows cold faster than the planet he inhabits.

An interesting concept considering we can now hide behind our anonymity and offend at will as long as it is within the, and skirting around any forum's subjective T&Cs.

I don't buy that for one minute.

Einstein also warned about 'Corporate disinformants' (which today is basically 'the news').

Are we all here not guilty of allowing offensive rhetoric lately from both parties, in fact, what's that quote about good people doing nothing?

Not all humanity is awesome, some of humanity are credulous, have authority bias (Milgram Experiment) and religious fundamentalism, fear of rejection, seek only personal gain, immature emotional intelligence, and some people who use jokes as an excuse to be abusive...you get the idea.

The only corporate disinformation is that the middle class benefits from the (non) trickle down theory.

tbh im offended by everything this entire existence is offensive so no need to be defensive about it haha i say its like how fish cant drown in water and anything you can point to as offensive is a trick and hippo crittering and then even noticing that is offensive at which point you just have to laugh at the absurdity of it all

I wasn't even done with PC an then it morphed into "woke"!!

Seriously tho. This being offended about everything not only came on fast, but irrationally as well.
At this point in the "Offended Saga" I'm not sure it isn't some sort of nutritional deficiency
driving it. It's very much like a psychiatric issue. Am actually more interested in what's going on with people than just bashing anyone.
