AI can now invent working biological viruses. 

In real world experiments, a team of Stanford researchers demonstrated that a virus with AI-written DNA could target and kill specific bacteria, they announced in a study last week. It opened up a world of possibilities where artificial viruses could be used to cure diseases and fight infections.

But experts say it also opened a Pandora’s box. Bad actors could just as easily use AI to crank out novel bioweapons, keeping doctors and governments on the backfoot with the outrageous pace at which these viruses can be designed, warn Tal Feldman, a Yale Law School student who formerly built AI models for the federal government, and Jonathan Feldman, a computer science and biology researcher at Georgia Tech (no word on whether the two are related).

What’s to stop others from using open data on human pathogens to build their own models?

Stanford and Arc Institute researchers gave an AI called Evo a dataset of viral genomes. It generated hundreds of new phage blueprints.

Here are the facts (from the report):
* Evo generated DNA sequences for 100 bacteriophages.
* 16 of those designs were functional when synthesized in the lab.
* Some were described as "potentially more lethal than its natural counterpart."
* The AI was trained with publicly available genetic data.
* Experts are openly warning that bad actors could use this to create novel pathogens.
 
What freaks me out...  I bet they are only shearing the safe parts.

Now remember our history:
* Pentagon accidentally mailed live anthrax to 200 labs.
* 1977 flu...  lab leak.
* SARS... Multiple accidental infections in labs after the outbreak.
* COVID... U.S. intelligence says lab origin.

Humans screw up. Over and over. Obvious pattern...
Easy future prediction: A Dangerous Pathogen Created by AI will be leaked.

It's not hard to imagine a scenario where AI decides humanity is the virus and creates a cure. 

Also, wonder how easy it would be to download Evo or clone it from leaked weights? 

Imagine some kid in his basement... downloads Evo or similar cloned AI systems from the dark web, ends up designing the ultimate bioweapon: Holds the world hostage till someone gives him 24,000 Robux's.

Sadly, unless I'm losing my mind and imagining things.. this is a modern alarmist take on a story which leaked a while back...

Back then it was about the tech level of CRISPR (?) and how it could be 'automated'...

Taken as paranoia then... we see now a new application for the algorithm clusters we are calling "AI."

As to whether or not someone is actually doing this... your guess is as good as mine.
