Memories

Rendered images of days gone by;
feelings invoked
creating new dimensions
of existence

You can't put your finger on them
some of the time,
but the chemistry is there
stirring the soul

Ambiguities seldom discriminated
for the vague
as their power moves you
to the core

And of minds' manifested clarity
like that one day
when an old song was new
beach bound

The sweltering sun beating down
Italian sandwiches
cheese flaccid from heat;
gritty with sand

CCoburn, that is a fantastic read. I love how you invoked days gone by.

Akashic Alzheimer's

Take, from the alter of my nostalgia
All memories of my past selves
Flay me with shards of regret
When I hold fast to anything past
Hammer the nail that sticks up and says
"We've been here before"
May forever be only the now
For only there do boundaries dissolve
All time writ forever in a single point
Of the circle centered everywhere
I followed the Science, and all I found was the Money.

Ooh, hit a chord there, CCoburn.

Took me back 40+ years to when my grandmother brought sandwiches and chicken drumsticks to our seaside visits. I miss the gritty sand and all that it stood for.

Honestly, it seems kind of disgusting thinking about it now. Eating a sandwich and biting down on something hard to the realization you're eating sand. I don't even have any explicit context other than eating sandwiches at the beach, but we were just kids and probably eating and horsing around, so you can only imagine how something like that might happen.

These days, if I was at the beach eating a sandwich and there was even the slightest hint of it containing any sand I'd be tossing it in the nearest trash receptacle.

Scrutiny of nostalgia is the sand in the sandwich.

It's like going back and trying the ice cream treats that were so wonderful as a child... and noticing how small and cheap they really were.

Best to hold fast to the feeling of the moments, rather than trying to recapture them.

"the sand in the sandwich" has been removed from its context though, so this would require something a bit more self-sufficient like: scrutiny of nostalgia is like milking an old cow.

The mother lode though would be all those 60s sci-fi flicks that were captivating as a kid gifting grand nostalgia, but to try and recapture that experience with any given film there's an abrupt and irreconcilable difference in perspectives between now and then.
