Yes, we cannot change things after they have become real but if we accept them "warts'n all" we can process them more easily for what they are. Honesty to the self instead of denial which leads to ignorance.

Wisdom knocks quietly, always listen carefully.... and be a River flowing calmly.

I like that metaphor!
It's very nice- simple and strong.
I feel lucky to have been introduced to Daoism in an active way when I was in college, I did this kind of Korean tai chi and chi gong, to sense energy, learn new ways of perceiving.
Bruce Lee's mantra is very apt , to flow like water.
This also is not passive;  it is flexible, but it is aware on a base level, and cannot rightly be compressed
“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
I am sure that is what Mr @nerbot meant when he said to accept everything.
Not passive rolling over but mental receptivity for adaptability.
