Rivers on earth do not split into more rivers. 

Some do.  Look at the Nile.  Plus, it could have been a man-made garden which diverted a small spring on purpose into four routes.

The Middle East and Northern Africa have been getting steadily drier.  There were wetlands in what is now the Sahara 10,000 years ago.  The Arabian peninsula need not have been a desert then.

However, I maintain that the rivers need not have been large or identifiable today especially if their former riverbeds were in a city.

Exactly, so Eden could have been a place with a lush garden back then.

In Revelation, after the world ,the sun, all the elements have disintegrated, (as described in 2Peter also) the new creation games the place of the sea of glass(lake of fire), the tree of life is still described in Eden as it was in Genesis and beside the river that flows from the throne. Therefore Eden never was on earth.

Has anyone considered the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to also fit the garden of Eden? They have roughly the same location.... just thought I'd throw that in here

After much study I have to conclude the biblical Eden is not and never was on this Earth. The fact that the tree of life is in the same place in Genesis and also is in Revelation after all creation is destroyed confirms this. Further yet, the book of Enoch also places this "tree" in the heavenly realm. It seems the majority of churches are lying to their members. This brings into the question the original nature of man before the fall. There is a lot of puzzle pieces that can be put together when this is realized. Take note that the four rivers in Genesis are actually the foundations of all creation . They are the four chief angels Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael. Upon them the great expanse rests. They have armies under them, these are the eyes in the wheels. The sea or expanse has four quadrants.

It's just a rinse and repeat of tales that came before from other organised religious practices, with the word "Eden" likely coming from Sumerian or Arcadian languages.

Many ancient cultures had stories of perfect gardens, like the Sumerian Dilmun, for instance, which is described as a pure and sacred place.
