Well if the parents observed and suffered his violent acts, they did society and him a disservice by not calling the police to perhaps get him the help he needed. They rather seemed to just blame it on the drug use and do nothing further.

Yeah, his father was a doctor so did they not call authorities because of family/professional reputation or are they immigrants that don't trust the system there?

For all we know, the parents may have tried to get him help, or did call the police in the past.

But yeah, it could be all of those things...or none of the above.
