Mavis Leno keeps a low profile in comparison to her husband, choosing instead to work behind the scenes of the non-profit groups she supports and runs. Leno has been the chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan since 1997. In 1999, Leno and her husband donated $100,000 to the organization, to further the cause of educating the public about the plight of Afghan women under the Taliban. The organization successfully protested the construction of an oil pipeline through Afghanistan, which could potentially have brought in billions of dollars to the Taliban.  According to Melissa Rossi, Leno was a driving force in changing the opinion of U.S. President Bill Clinton and the executives of the now defunct oil company Unocal Corporation concerning the Taliban, after Leno had shed light on the group's treatment of women.

I read the Quran and in my mind and my perception not being Muslim rather Roman Catholic upbringing, somewhat similar, I can interpret it differently. But when a Muslim women at work decides she needs to tell me, without me asking, why she is wearing a hijab, I just let her explain to me why she does. I won't force the whole story of me having to cover my head in Catholic church ... just because. I just let it lay. She is free to believe what she wants to believe and cover her head. It's not my issue. My issue is not covering my head in my church because bullshit.

One last comment on this -- getting too far off topic.  Not only is there patriarchy there is also hierarchy.  Men are also controlled under rule of elders.  Men could be punished for allowing their wife to break rules and tradition.  The men are not free either in some countries.
