I used to listen to him briefly back in the 90's. Back then, it was less political and actually funny at times. However, he's always been a crass douchebag. He alienated more than half of his listeners with his political rhetoric. I guess SiriusXM didn't want to continue to give him $100 million a year for a tanking franchise. He obviously doesn't need the money. But is 95 employees are apparently in panic. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

I would be fine never hearing his voice again.
Be kind to everyone!

Anybody notice that since DOGE cut wasteful spending, a lot of Left leaning radio and TV programs are getting cancelled.....or is it just me ?

PBS
NPR
Joy Reid
..and from what I've read, The View is in serious trouble.
Democrats are falling far behind in fund raising also. Almost like all those shows were pumping money right back into the Leftist politicians pockets. A "one hand washes the other " deal.
You get us the funding and we'll make sure there's a nice donation to your campaigns.

Maybe my bill will go down from 17.99 once they aren't paying for him anymore.

Isn't Stern the loser that didn't leave his basement for 3 or 4 years because he was scared of Covid?
Move on.

Sirius was hemorrhaging money with the Stern contract. Loud, crass, and edgy barely worked when he was 50, he had to know his audience was waning
Quote:- Historical Context: At its peak on terrestrial radio (1986–2005), The Howard Stern Show had up to 20 million daily listeners across 60 syndicated markets, dominating morning radio in places like New York from 1994 to 2001. After moving to SiriusXM in 2006, Stern’s audience shifted to a smaller but more dedicated subscriber base.
- SiriusXM Era (2015–2025): Estimates suggest Stern’s audience has fluctuated between 1 million and 10 million active listeners, with some variation depending on the source and timeframe. A 2022 report estimated about 10 million active listeners, with a couple million tuning in sporadically, down from the 20 million daily peak during his terrestrial days. This reflects the shift to a paywalled platform, where not all of his former fanbase followed.
- Decline in Listenership: Over the past decade, there’s evidence of a gradual decline. A 2024 Reddit discussion referenced a rumor that Stern’s live broadcasts might have as few as 150,000 listeners, with replays boosting totals to around 100,000–250,000. A 2007 Arbitron report, for comparison, noted 1.2 million weekly listeners, suggesting a significant drop from even early SiriusXM days. Some attribute this to Stern’s shift from “shock jock” content to less controversial, interview-focused programming, which alienated parts of his older fanbase.
- Cultural and Platform Shifts: Industry observers note that Stern’s long-form radio show faces competition from podcasts and short-form content on platforms like YouTube and Spotify. By 2025, analysts suggested his show no longer commands the cultural relevance it once did, contributing to lower engagement.
- Specific Claims: A 2024 post on X claimed Stern’s daily listeners dropped from 15 million on terrestrial radio to 500,000–2 million on SiriusXM, though this is unverified and likely speculative. Another source from 2024 tied to a Kamala Harris interview estimated 10 million listeners, but this may reflect total reach rather than consistent daily numbers.
Key Points by Year- 2015–2016: No precise ratings are available, but Stern’s influence was still strong, with SiriusXM reportedly paying him $80–100 million annually, suggesting a sizable audience. His contracts during this period were tied to subscriber growth bonuses, indicating he was a major draw.
- 2017–2019: A 2019 estimate put Stern’s audience at around 10 million, with SiriusXM’s premium package model relying on his dedicated fanbase. However, some fans began criticizing his “woke” shift, which may have started impacting listenership.
- 2020–2022: The COVID-19 pandemic reportedly led to a sharp drop-off for some listeners, with complaints about repetitive content and Stern’s focus on politics or personal anecdotes. A 2022 New York Post article noted declining ratings, echoed by fan discussions on Reddit and X, though exact figures remained elusive.
- 2023–2025: Speculation about cancellation surfaced in 2025, with sources claiming SiriusXM might not renew Stern’s $100 million-a-year contract due to declining listenership and high costs. Insiders suggested his audience was no longer worth the investment, with estimates of live listeners potentially below 150,000 for some shows.
Why the Decline?
Several factors likely contributed:- Platform Shift: Moving to SiriusXM limited access to paying subscribers, unlike free terrestrial radio.
- Content Evolution: Stern’s pivot to less provocative, interview-heavy content alienated some fans who preferred his earlier, edgier style.
- Competition: The rise of podcasts (e.g., Joe Rogan, with 14.5 million Spotify followers in 2024) and short-form content has drawn younger audiences away.
- Political Backlash: Stern’s vocal political opinions, especially post-2020, turned off some listeners, with Trump supporters particularly critical after his 2024 comments.
Limitations- SiriusXM’s lack of transparency means most numbers are estimates or anecdotal. Reddit and X posts, while reflective of fan sentiment, aren’t reliable for precise data.
- Claims of Stern losing “nearly 1 million subscribers” after a 2024 Kamala Harris interview were debunked as satirical, highlighting the risk of misinformation.
- Ratings for specific years or episodes are rarely reported, making it impossible to provide a granular breakdown.
Conclusion
Over the last 10 years, The Howard Stern Show’s audience likely dropped from around 10 million in the mid-2010s to potentially under 1 million for live broadcasts by 2025, with replays and sporadic listeners boosting totals slightly. The decline stems from platform changes, evolving content, and competition from newer media formats. For the most current insights, checking SiriusXM’s official announcements or Stern’s own statements on The Howard Stern Show might offer clues, but hard numbers remain scarce.

But change is

Opie and Anthony were twice as funny as Stern for a fraction of the expense.
I despised my Sirius bill every year because Stern inflated it so much.
Apparently the line between edgy and insufferable is very thin.
I have noticed the coincidence of some programs being axed after the DOGE cuts.
Interesting.
