What is the correct method / syntax to refer to another member here on DI?
On some forums it is to precede their name with an "@" symbol, or a "#" symbol, and on others there is a drop-down box where you can choose from a list.
Most of these function usually result in a notification to the other member that their alias has been referenced in another post. This is the function I am asking about, how do we do this?
There are times when you want to acknowledge what someone has said, but it may not be a direct reply to their post. Still, you want the person to know that you've referenced them so they can see the remark. It basically calls that person's attention to the statement.
Hopefully, I've worded this so it makes sense. I can't figure out a better way to say it.
Thanks in advance!

Here, let's try this... if I write your name preceded by an @ it becomes clickable and takes me to you profile page.
I wonder if you will receive a notification that you were tagged.

@FlyingClayDisk
I received an alert notification that you "replied" to my post. However, I tried the same thing and I didn't see a clickable hyperlink. I used my alias though. I'll try it with yours...
@ Encia22
Ahh, it DOES work there! I'll go back and see if it does the same thing in my test post. This is a start anyway.
BTW - Here is where I am experimenting with different things

It doesn't seem to create a specific alert.
Ok, I only received two notifications.
1) that you replied to me;
2) that you quoted.

Right, that's what I'm seeing too. I tried all of the other derivatives I could think of and those had no effect at all. Only the "@" symbol seems to create an invisible hyperlink (at least it's invisible to me. I can click on it, but it doesn't show as a normal link does. I use dark mode though, so I don't know if this makes a difference).
You can see the other expressions I tried at the link in my previous post.

Yep, same here; dark mode, no visible hyperlink, but it's active.
I went with the @ because that's how you catch someone's attention on Discord.
I would guess that there is some kind of plugin that can be used to provide a similar functionality. Perhaps even a general broadcast, too, that admin can use to notify all users, again, like on Discord.

I guess we'll have to wait for an admin here to come along and hopefully answer this question. I hope there is an answer for this feature because I think it's a handy thing to be able to do. I use this feature quite frequently when I know it exists because I like to give people credit for their ideas and input.

If I had to guess we currently use this plugin https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=29
Also an alternate plugin here https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=558
and here https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=885
Hope that helps!
Well, thanks...but we already tried the "@" symbol and that didn't really work the way we had hoped. I'll look through the other links you provided, but I thought I'd just communicate that much. Thanks again!
edit - I looked through the rest of the links you provided, and you can see from my link in the reply to Encia22 above, I tried virtually every bbcode trick and prefix I know of, and the only one which did anything at all was the "@" symbol, but this doesn't send an alert to the member being tagged, it only provides an (invisible) hyperlink to their profile. I guess you could PM/DM that member with a quick "I tagged you in a post" message, but that's way too difficult so I doubt anyone would do this. Regarding the 3rd link you provided, I'd have to understand more about which versions (if any) of PHP (or other) software is being used to explore any of that further, but the net result is the same; there doesn't appear to be any special character or sequence which automatically triggers a notification alert when you tag someone.
The search continues.
(but thanks again).

I misunderstood this as you received the alert and didn't fully understand your objective to tag someone like with
https://community.mybb.com/mods.php?action=view&pid=885 MentionMe plugin
Unless I'm misunderstanding again pretty sure MentionMe plugin would solve this because it sends an alert when you're mentioned.
To Admin: *cough* Install This *cough*
