Embarrassing All Female Origin Flight 'Crew'
#41
Dang, the NYT style section getting absolutely savage -- they start out the article lukewarm and bland, then at the end where almost no one reads:

Quote:Even Levitating in Space, Katy Perry Manages to Get Dunked On
The maker of numerous pop hits has always had trouble getting respect.

...So the sight of Ms. Perry levitating inside a phallic rocket as she held onto a daisy — a tribute to her daughter, Daisy, that she said in interviews she chose to bring with her because the flowers are often described as “weeds” because they are really resilient — was perfectly in keeping with the image she had designed for herself.

The event was trumpeted as having something vaguely to do with feminism, but in one of the numerous criticisms delivered by celebrities after the spaceflight, Ms. Wilde summed up the experience succinctly on Instagram, sharing a photo of Ms. Perry with the flower along with the message, “Billion dollars bought some good memes, I guess.”

I find the "meta-story" here interesting -- how the public take was initially positive, then a little questioning, then really just avalanches into everyone calling it 'cringe'. The story-behind-the-story of how public opinion mutates and establishes, like a crystal forming around seed particle, is fascinating.

Anyway I still think the whole flight thing is kinda cool and, at worst, mostly harmless.

What you are describing is that the quick to respond were positive then it changed to negative as those that think it over shared their opinions.

As I have stated before, the backlash to this whole thing is not about the ride or those on it. It is about how the MSM ran with it as being some significant accomplishment.

I flew a small aircraft for a few minutes once. I do not go around bragging about how I am a pilot. Paying passengers are not astronauts. Especially when it is just straight up and down.

I agree.    Astronaut Requirements - NASA
Have at least two years of related professional experience obtained after degree completion or at least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time on jet aircraft. Be able to pass the NASA long-duration flight astronaut physical. *The master's degree requirement can also be met by: (Even more stuff)...

These gals had some courage to go at least. I wouldn't do it if they paid me the ticket price. Too risky for my taste.

Especially especially when the craft flies to sub orbital altitude on autopilot because none of the passengers are qualified to manually operate it.

Courage or lack of understanding of the risks involved? There have not been enough flights of this kind to estimate the risks yet, so there is no way to compare it to other activities. It may be less dangerous than a helicopter ride. We just don't know yet. Right now it is just an experimental aircraft.

Like all travel, one trip will go very wrong. Only then will they understand exactly what they risked.

I would risk such a ride. I also understand all the risks in that ride. I would not expect it to be covered by MSM though.

Wow a lot of hate welling up for this joy ride I see.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/katy-perry-re...48147.html

I guess because only the super privileged get to do it.

There wasn’t as much hating on Shatner when he did it.

But Joan Collins got a dig in.

I guess the world has become a more hateful place 3 years later?

Shatner talked about the experience afterword. MSM did not make such a special deal about it though.

MSM telling everyone about how special it was, that is the problem. That is what spoiled it this time.

I think of this as a test flight like in the early years of the space program when they sent animals up into space. I believe that they sent a few different kinds of animals up before they finally sent up a chimp. These early test flights with animals were to see the effects of space on their physiology. IMO, this test flight is similar except they were testing human psychology, both of the women on the flight and those on Earth watching it take place.

So, these women were not astronauts, not cosmonauts, not even passengers on a joy ride, they were merely lab animals in an social engineering science experiment. The other option is it was a marketing experiment or feasibility study created to test the public's reaction, but I'm more inclined to believe social engineering. Perhaps it was both of these things, they'd be smart to do it that way, so maybe not.

I just came across a video that explains the problems with this ride and Blue Origin in general.

It seems the FAA is also part of the problem.

Gee, if I were to sell our house and we took out all of our savings the wife and I could take an eleven minute flight into space? Question

I don't care if I was a millionaire, I would not spend that much to take a ride.  I took flying lessons years back, and flue a piper cherokee around and that was fun, because I was flying a plane.  Better than the cessna I flew the first time, the heater in the cessna was not very good in the winter.

I think flying a little plane around the local area looking at things would be way more fun than going up into space.
