Embarrassing All Female Origin Flight 'Crew'
#1
https://www.nbcnews.com/science/space/li...rcna200921

You've all heard about it - the all-female Origin flight crew that went up with 6 women for 11 minutes to the edge of space and then returned.  Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, Kerrianne Flynn.

My rant ...

First of all, it wasn't a 'flight crew'.   A crew are people who are on board and doing work and flying the machine.   This was a flight with six PASSENGERS.  They did nothing.  And that's fine if they did nothing, because they were just tourists, just passengers.  But don't call them 'crew'.

Second, the cabin had microphones and everyone on Earth heard everything the women said and did.  Katy Perry, Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez screamed bloody murder all while the takeoff was taking place, and then screamed again during reentry and especially when the parachutes deployed.

Gayle King had done an interview before hand and did the usual 'this is important for women' kind of thing about this being an all female passenger manifest.  (no it's not important for women, but of course this is what she was pushing).  So with this being so important for women ... she and Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez spent their time screaming like 10 year old girls going on Space Mountain in Disney World.  I'm sure any real female astronauts who were watching were thinking ... what the hell?

It was EMBARRASSING for women.   Man up ladies!

And third, the 11 minute ride cost $300,000 each.  I"m sure none of them paid for it themselves.  I'd bet a box of donuts on that one.   I suppose it doesn't matter who pays for it .... but it's annoying that it costs that much money and someone has it to throw away on screaming ninny celebrities for an 11 minute joyride when the money could be used for so many other good things for people.   I suppose if those women weren't such ninnies I wouldn't have minded as much.

There ... that's my rant.  (and for those who don't know .. I"m a woman).

5 aliens for being level headed. The entertainment industry has been pushing the hyperemotional response from women for a long time. All the while, trying to empower women. They both don't equate. I've never understood why people scream when they are scared. The only thing I can come up with is, it's an 'all eyes on me' defense mechanism.

I would take that flight in a heartbeat, and I don't mind telling you, I'd probably scream like a little girl.    Bezos, Musk, Branson, they launch their rockets because they can.   I think NASA has been left behind, mostly due to lack of innovation and funding.   I am glad for any wealthy people who step up and push the edge.    I very much enjoyed the post-landing drama.    It was billed as the capsule landing at 1 MPH.   Bullshit.   I have done more than a little bit of skydiving.  That landing rang those women's bell.   I would guess it as about 15 mph, or perhaps a little more.   I look forward to the video from inside the spacecraft.   I love that Katy Perry was on board.   I really like her energy.   I hope she makes her experience into  music.   I, also have once in my life kissed the ground after a flight.   That takes a certain amount of humble to do.

Why couldn't they each have paid $150,000 instead of $300,000 for a round trip. Wink

Nice space suits though.

Quote:...“This isn’t what you would call ‘normal,’ but neither is sending six women into space,” she said. “If you want to do glam, great; if you don’t, great.” The point was everyone gets to choose.

Then she quoted something she said Katy Perry had told her: “We’re putting the ‘ass’ in astronaut,” she said.

Yes, and they all did little tweaks to the outfit, and each had different footwear.   I wonder if we will ever see the video from inside.   They might all be screaming the whole time.   I would be, but with delight.

I gotta agree.

There's not much empowerment or showing of trained ability here to brag about for it to be any type of historic first. It does have a hokey feel to it. 6 celebities getting flown by autopilot.

The first time 6 women were above the Karman line in a single craft at once, beating the more empowering ISS record of four at once in 2010.

I'm sure they were professional enough, but astronauts don't have ticket prices to consider.

There's enough real astronauts to actually do this if they wanted. Both Nasa and SpaceX have had multiple female pilots and mission commanders.

But they don't do it, because it would just be a publicity stunt that undermines the integrity of any mission, and not by any lack of ability, but by being a stupid publicity stunt more than it is a mission.

Equality already arrived in space flight. Sally Ride and on. And I completely get the frustration in promoting this as an empowerment first.

Because it really does feel closer to that time that woman sued to get into the citadel and quit in 3 weeks citing stress and illness. Disappointing. Or like when No Doubt released their second album.

And honestly, the only reason this COULD be done (with the crew they had) was because it was entirely automated. NASA and SpaceX have a ton of women, but flight schedules and training schedules to consider. And equality seems better achieved on a flight of 3 and 3 anyway. They already do that though. 6 trained NASA astronauts on a Space X mission would be awesome. And nothing like this flight.

But hey, at least they all looked gorgeous for the camera.

UGH!  I agree.  What a disgrace to the gender!  Neither of us would be screaming, and we could at least run some experiments.

Of course, I don't look good in a spacesuit or in photos...

Ah... this was a glamour flight.

Public relations agents got paid...

People looked fetching
gender virtue signaled

The right names were cited in the report...

which was about what now?...

Bezos ventures, Perry adventure, something about '...and the rest?'
or a new 'recycled' re-entry vehicle?
Or will there be media products about 'how I felt in zero G?'
