Don't get obsessed.
1978 was Jonestown Massacre.

I wonder about Sisyphus sometimes.
What if:

He just sat down one day and said,
"The hell with this!
What ya gonna do Zeus, punish me?"
There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people. - Commander William Adama

Ah Jonestown.
The perfect culmination of decades of psychological experimentation and research in mind control in the intelligence and military communities.

Since we are in the dark side , don't forget also that's when Iran became a crappy theological Islamic state.

I'm tempted to ask how you got there, also not really sure I want to know

edit: not sure about this rabbit hole
Quote:The Peoples Temple was formed by Jim Jones in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1955.[14] The movement purported to practice what it called "apostolic socialism."[15][16] In doing so, the Temple preached that "those who remained drugged with the opiate of religion had to be brought to enlightenment – socialism."[17][18] Jones had held an interest in Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Adolf Hitler from a young age, and would later frequently praise Stalin and Vladimir Lenin as heroes.[19] He was also upset with persecution against the Communist Party USA.[20] In the early 1960s, Jones visited Guyana – then a British colony – while on his way to establishing a short-lived Temple mission in Brazil.[21]

A work of investigative journalism that presents the theory that the Central Intelligence Agency employed the Reverend Jim Jones to administer a pharmaceutical field test in mind control and ethnic weaponry to a large test group, namely the membership of the Peoples Temple. Proposes that Dr. Laurence Layton (Former Chief of the U.S. Army's Chemical and Biological Warfare Division) cultured the AIDS virus to be tested and deployed in a CIA-backed experiment in Jonestown, Guyana.

In the early 1970s, suspicions began to surface in the press, implicating the Peoples Temple in an array of allegations including gunrunning, drug-smuggling, kidnapping, murder, brainwashing, extortion and torture. Under attack at home, and feeling the pressure abroad, Temple officials undertook secret negotiations with the Soviet Embassy in Georgetown, laying the groundwork for the en masse defection of more than a thousand poor Americans. According to the CIA, it took no interest in these discussions.
Nevertheless, when Congressman Ryan began to scrutinize the Temple in 1978, two things happened. First, according to his aides, he was stonewalled by the State Department. Second, upon arriving in Guyana, he was given an escort who had been identified a decade earlier as a ranking CIA officer.[sup][43][/sup]

Stretching the subject a bit.

I’d say the biggest effect & change of society was the “Fair Housing Act” 1968.

I am a perpetual outsider... in that the lesson I lament most that we aren't even ready to learn...

me included...

not everything HAS to be a BATTLE.

Battles distinguish themselves in an endless list of innocent casualties, some minor, some catastrophic.

There's too much "comeuppance" in the soup.

Once you make "ideas" defend themselves, the battle rages on.

Jonestown was the result of following personality cult of "a chosen one" with a "vision of a brighter tomorrow".

Islamic revolution was '79 if I remember correctly. Religious fundamentalism at its finest, maybe Saudi Arabia is still ahead though.
