Regarding China’s “Nuclear Drone” Can Fly Forever...

That “nuclear drone” headline makes it sound more dramatic than it is. What’s really going on is a Chinese startup called Betavolt has developed a tiny nuclear-powered battery. It’s about the size of a coin and could, in theory, produce power for up to 50 years without needing to be recharged.
 
They’re talking about future drones using this battery to fly without ever landing, which sounds impressive. But right now, the prototype only puts out about 100 microwatts. That’s enough to power sensors or small electronics, not an actual drone engine.
 
They hope to scale it up to one watt by 2025, but even then it’s a long way from powering flight. It’s an exciting step in battery tech, sure, but there’s no drone flying forever just yet. Most of this is forward-looking hype, not current reality.
