All the weapons in the world won't help you if someone who is prepared to do violence catches you by surprise. They may have run through some ideas of what to do if you resisted and have planned for this. Most people really are not prepared to kill someone -- and since most murders are NOT committed by strangers, the attacker might have a good notion of where the weapons are stashed and will lure the person away from them before attacking.
A better option is having a dog that will bark at people entering the house or electronic door and window alarms that go off if accessed without the code.
Modern life is far less dangerous than in earlier times, but if you live in an area where there are frequent attacks, consider preventive measures before considering a weapon.

You need both...a way to be alerted so you aren't caught by surprise and a way to defend yourself too. Otherwise what are you gonna do after the 30s-1min you might have before said badman makes it to you. You also need to practice with said defense to actually be able to utilize it under pressure. I guess if you don't want to do that and something happens that's on you. Not everyone just wants your things...sometimes they want YOU to do bad things to.

My daughter had somebody break into thier apartment while she was alone late at night, she didn't hear till her dog started growling, and they were at her bedroom door. She grabbed her .38 and cocked it and said loudly Im about to shoot through the door, and they ran off and even dropped her cell phone on the way out.

Everything changes with a dog, "the Old Guard ring camera."
But there are also the ring cameras or ADT like companies. And in urban environments; Butterfly kiosks, security, and building fobs.
Trying to put myself in their rural Idaho position, I would probably need a locked bedroom door and advanced warning of at least 5 seconds to respond. Because if I woke up to the knife wielding lunatic through the bedroom door, it's already too late.
My first response is probably to scream. Followed by an instant preservation of life reflex which has between him at the door and walking 7 feet over to my bed for me to grab even a loaded gun and get off a shot. That could be as little as 2 seconds.
With the camera I'm more conditioned to stay silent and watch the feed with much more awareness of the situation unfolding.
So all the paranoid Dale Gribbles with homes that are fortified with security cameras, alarms, maintained perimeters, guard dogs, and easily accessible firearms are the most ready to thwart a home invasion.

A good dog does make a world of difference...
My daughters were/are the same way, but the one with the dog said if she saw the door handle twist again, after she yelled out and was going to shoot through the door, which is what I always told them to do.
She was petrified, and I don't blame her... but
Don't pull a Wendy in the Shining.
They were pretty sure it was somebody in the complex, too, which is creepy AF, but they likely knew them and her boyfriend's work hours, climbed the balcony, jimmied the sliding door, and they were in
We live in a semi-sketchy area, lots of night noises, people screwing the cars Ring cam will alert occasionally, and I get up all the time, checking the front door, back door, and ground windows.
Part of the problem with the Idaho thing while Moscow has crime, but it's not Chicago or Memphis; they had a false sense of security.
Still, I'd prefer a rural area over an urban or suburban area, we get too many home invasions here.

If you are ready, you won't be "caught by surprise." I am a thumper, and have thumpy things near me. My Bride is a cutter, and she has blades near her. We have cameras. Our doors and windows are secure. All the people around us are our friends, and we are a group of people who will protect each other. So it should be everywhere.
We have drilled for decades with our response. When we lived in the U.S., we trained in the boonies with our licensed firearms. We are here now, and can't have those things. There are bladed weapons all around our house. We are NOT afraid. We are at peace with the people around us who live here. I am almost 70 years old. I hope nobody that doesn't know us looks at us and sees a victim.
Most people don't know what they are capable of. I have been with the love of my life for 40 years. There is nothing either of us wouldn't do for the other. Nothing.

Daewoo K2 brings back memories.
People ask my favourite home defence weapon, but they don't like the answer. It's mostly for theatrical effect, and to intimidate your prey.

I’ve been paying attention to the Idaho killings since it happened.
Truly evil and tragic.
That dude is a demon.
I’ve had the unfortunate experience of having three of my family members murdered.
My unarmed sister shot by someone she knew.
My unarmed female cousin stabbed by a stranger.
My unarmed grandpa shot by a stranger.
I used to worry about my unarmed sweet fragile wife.
She decided to hire an instructor and put in the time at the range.
She’s not scared of firearms anymore, shes trained for situations, and she’s a great shot.
She’s very confident in her skills and I don’t worry as much about her anymore.
I encourage all of my female family members and friends to get proficient and carry.
A gun is the great equalizer.
The reality most times is nobody is going to save you but yourself.
