I had to look up DEW. I don’t know the lingo. Direct Energy Weapons…

Directed Energy Weapons. Could be anything from a laser to microwave systems. Basically anything that uses energy instead of a kinetic projectile.

You wouldn't be countering drone swarms with DEW equipped F-35s. Ground weapons have a pretty significant energy budget.

I was definitely picturing it more like a sci-fi drone zapper...   
That makes sense, than something they'd actually want to waste flight energy on. 

 I’ve played too much Halo and XCOM. : )
