He was a partisan hack who wasn't funny and lost 40 million a year.
Overdue for cancellation.
The show consistently led late-night ratings for 9 straight years, averaging over 2 million viewers, which would seem to be no small potatoes, and well above the likes of its competitors in a lot of respects.

Again the $40 million loss was not due to poor ratings, but industry-wide declines in ad revenue, expensive production, and corporate shifts.

CBS kept the show because it brought prestige and was somewhat culturally relevant.

I would have thought you would have been ok with Colbert, considering he's a staunch catholic who speaks publicly about his faith.

Not everyone's cup of tea i suppose.

Personally, he has me in stitches.  Saint2

Colbert, a staunch pro abortion catholic.
Comedy gold there.

The marketplace has spoken.
If he had a good product he wouldn’t need to find new employment.

He chose to be a fall guy. Kinda comes with the territory of being a self-serving opportunist for 50+ years.

I feel sorry for him too going through life without a backbone or conscience.

I was referring to things that were going to happen no matter who was president, things that were obviously going to end badly, that he volunteered for or just simply drew the short straw to take the fall for. Example: withdrawing from Afghanistan.

Which sucked.
Gutfeld has 3 million, and he has a much smaller audience range because he's on cable.
Colbert was on network tv and had more people who could view him.

From DUCK AI ASSIST -

In the US, approximately 125 million households have at least one TV set that is used to watch programming. This represents nearly 97% of all US households. Within this group, about 18.125 million households access free TV programming using digital antennas (OTA), while an additional 4.625 million are cable and satellite TV homes that also have OTA-capable sets. This means a total of 22.75 million households use antennas to access TV content.

He makes a living off hate and lies and slander and mockery.
Five days a week.  Week after week.  Year after year.
That's not healthy for anyone and not good for the soul.
Joking around and poking at people once in a while ... sure.
When done in good natured ribbing and not done often.
But a steady daily diet of hate, lies, slander and mockery?
NO.

If he had a good product he wouldn’t need to find new employment.

He doesn’t try to hide the fact that his views dont always line up perfectly with church teachings.

Instead, he seems to believe faith and personal choice can both matter.

And that's part of what makes him interesting.

He’s not afraid to live in the gray areas.

As to the marketplace having spoken, not necessarily.

TV shows end for many reasons, including budgets, shifting viewer habits, and not just quality.

Firefly and Enterprise spring to mind, but that's just because I like sci-fi.

A good product can still get canceled if the business model changes or the format becomes outdated.

And that's what's happening with digital viewer migration to other media formats.

LoL

Have you met the Holy Roman Church of St. Peter or the greater part of recorded history?

Because one may surmise they have also been known to dabble in and/or make a living from hate, lies, slander, and mockery, in the past.

It's fair to dislike Colbert's style, personal taste, and all that jazz, but calling it "hate, lies, slander, and mockery" ignores the context.

And mockery in comedy isn't new, it's been used for centuries to spotlight injustice or absurdity.

Nope.  That's what it was.
And I am correct in saying that a steady diet of that is not healthy for a persons mind or soul.
