I liked Colbert when he was funny. Same with Kimmel. Same with Letterman. Carson knew how to do it. He made fun of everyone, even his own network. But it made money. Gutfeld is the same. He's not afraid to make fun of himself or anyone else. *shrugs* Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Colbert = self righteous performative outrage.

The high production costs, declining TV ad revenue are the reasons for the loss in profits. Well, that, and digital viewer migration to other media formats.

When it comes to comedians and talk show hosting... it seems that it is very likely that the writers and star would have been a more prosperous enterprise... IF .... they had allowed the creative element to manifest in the performances WITHOUT mandating "towing the party line" and "protect/besmirch others without variation."
There was always tons and tons of material they skipped because it didn't feed the right "appearance." (The principle hazard in entertainment enterprise... 'activism' of any kind.) Comedy and virtue signaling don't mix the way they wanted them to... so they "fixed" it. Everyone loves laughing... but apparently the only thing CBS wants associated with laughter are the enemies of CBS' "virtue agenda." (Which, ironically, is what murdered the news industry, such as it was.) These moguls lose billions each year... ALL THE TIME. (Anyone care to remember the billion-dollar money hole that became "The Lord of the Rings" HBO series?... And they just kept going.) Where are they getting their money back... and does it have anything to do with the product? Colbert is a professional entertainer... a very good one... He is paid to perform... "UNDER DIRECTION" ... as they all are. Very few comedians can command "a pass" from that kind of reality. Most of them die too young...

Late night variety shows started their descent after Leno and Letterman retired and there won’t ever be another Johnny Carson.
Im sure there’s not a fraction of people who still watch the big 4 local affiliate channels anymore at the time they are on the air. Younger people are usually on their phones with social media or streaming movies or series in the evenings. It’s simply the ending of an era. Too many entertainment options these days to compete with.
