A Strong Rumbling in Texas

I've noticed this several times when walking the dog prior to him refusing to go on walks.  It's a rumbling sound, kind of the sound a heavy train makes when driving past or when you're on the plane at take off as the jets go full throttle.  Except, there's no trains in the area.  And there are no other sounds except this extremely deep rumble, no clicks or clacks just a constant deep rumble. 

You feel it physically in your chest. 

That's the weirdes part about it in my opinion, the sensation of your chest rumbling.  Not your feet, just your chest.  The dog didn't react to it except glance over in the direction before continuing the walk.

This is happening in Whitney, Texas.  I've spoken to a few of the people around here who confirm they hear the same thing but don't know what it is.  They said it's been reported in the local newspaper a "while back" but again, without explanation.  It's been said it "could be" SpaceX but it's some 400+ miles away from the closest SpaceX facility.

I've looked around as much as I could to try to find a cause for it.  There's just not much in the area it's coming from except some sparse residential homes and maybe a Mexican restaurant.  

I'm just curious if anyone here has experienced something similar and if they found out what it was.

I can't find anything at USGS in that area. Is there any big construction projects happening that your aware of? It could also be some defense projects making that rumbling. Texas is not short on defense contractors.
Pretty interesting though. Reminds me of the sky humming that had thousands of reports all across the country some years ago.

SpaceX operates a Rocket Development and Test Facility in McGregor, Texas, where they happen to test rocket engines and thrusters before being used on missions...  not that far from Whitney Tx.

Whitney is a little "hole in the wall" town, probably more cows than people.  There's no construction going on in Whitney, minus the new residential homes being built.

As for defense contractors, no clue.  Again, Whitney isn't a large town.  I think we'd know if there was anything like that going on here.  But I can't say yes or no definitely.

I did not know that, thanks for the info.  But the noise is coming from the opposite direction "up" from Whitney if that makes sense.  But hey, I guess it could be reverb of sorts from SpaceX's tests.  Another thing to keep in mind when I try to dig deeper.

I'm 100% certain Whitney, TX  is hearing those tests... as well even farther north. It probably sounds like a large low-flying jet or an earthquake rumble.

Next time you hear it, check the WHTX helicorder... you can actually confirm it in real time.

I've recently (past 4 weeks) heard something south of DFW.  It's happened 2x already and it's definitely some kind of jet that has an extremely low rumble that you can hear for about 2 minutes. 
I get jets all day flying overhead on approach/departure from DFW Airport so I know what typical jets sound like but both times I've heard this, I've gone outside to look for it and see nothing

I would think that noise in the DFW area would drown out the sounds from SpaceX’s McGregor test facility... unless you're in just the right place, with the right elevation and conditions.

Still, rocket engine tests can travel pretty far. DFW could be within range.... most likely you'd only hear a low, distant rumble, depending on conditions.

Yeah, it could also be some sort of new jet test... there’s Lockheed and other military activity in that region.
They do a lot of pilot training out in western and northwestern Texas. Maybe, every now and then they fly something in to spook the recruits... 

For the most part, I would bet on this as the source... at least near the OP.

Are there any data centers within a few hundred miles of you? All those cooling fans can be heard over long distances in the quiet areas with the right atmospheric conditions. 

I have some just over a mile from my house. I can even hear them when I drive within a half mile of them with the windows up. This is an industrial area hear that drounds them out over a distance. Gas turbine generators, carpet mills, recycling grinders, rock grinders, etc... all within a few miles. I can tell what plants are running and if the power load is high from listening from my yard.
