This rant greatly pales in comparison to the many, many genuinely serious issues today which a person might rant about. If you're looking for social commentary or deep political rant, just say no and go read something else that is more to your liking. No, this is a rant about a movie. As it turns out, a very good movie.
A Man Called Otto. Billed by Netflix AND Rotten Tomatoes as a Comedy. Oh, ha ha. The [vulgar expletive] movie had me crying twice before I was even halfway through the movie. [vulgar expletive gerund] Tom Hanks. I should have known. Even his face has changed to reflect grief and loss. I don't know what Tom Hanks is going through, or has seen, but just looking at him makes me want to give him a hug. When he smiles, his eyes don't follow suit. Even the lines in his forehead reflect pain.
So, this is a movie about (don't worry, no spoilers) a man who has experienced loss and has decided to commit suicide. HA! HA! Are you feeling the comedy already.
Neighbors move in to rent nearby. She is pregnant with her third child and is Hispanic. Her husband is affable. Together along with other neighbors, they shape Otto's view of the world.
It's a really good movie. I laughed in several places. Otto lost his wife, so perhaps that is why it moves me so much, the awareness of that happening to dear friends of mine, and the fear of it happening to me.
Still, not a comedy. Dramedy, maybe. Heartfelt drama with comedic chops. Lots of them. Shit. I just realized..... I'm not ranting against the movie or Tom Hanks (who is always incredible). Nope. It's NETFLIX's fault for trying to bend the definition of a movie to squeeze this into "comedy". I'm sure I still would have watched it, because I'm a fan of Tom Hanks. For me, there are more cries in this movie than laughs, however it just moved into 12th place in my all-time favorites. That's really saying something in my world.
Now I'm just rambling. What a flaccid rant. FUCK YOU NETFLIX!!!!!!
better?
