Great thread and very important question mate - there's a full Sowell video here and pretty amazing to think that the vast majority of Americans are unaware of the reason for the formation of their own Navy.

We technically wouldn't know if they were asking for reparations.

Where did they all go?

They may be gone or they may have been quietly repatriated during various foreign occupations of North Africa. 

Are there people in, say, France, who had been Ottoman slaves before France occupied Algeria?
