If the Cavalier adherents in the South needed Cavalier society, why didn't they come out for their king in 1776 and 1812? Why didn't they bother to grow enough food for themselves in the Civil War? The population density was low, they probably could have even bought shoes by selling their excess. Why did so many of them stay home or desert in the Civil War?
