I honestly haven't a clue about all this stuff, the problem is consciousness is apparently as individualistic as it gets which comes with it's own problems. Dreams are usually somewhat illogical.
Take what UltraBudgie mentioned about pivoting for instance, I've always seen it as a pin... The subject or pinned topic stays stable but the world changes around the focal point. These are what I consider 'normal' dreams and are typically the more difficult to raise awareness within, for me anyway. The scope of the pin can change but too much awareness usually equals waking up...
Full consciousness within a dream doesn't seem tenable, I will awaken fully within about 90 seconds although it's hard to gauge time within a dream. The more I experience this the more I liken it to being in two places at once since you're aware you're in a dream state whilst also being in a bed. You've got dream consciousness and actual consciousness happening at once. It's in those moments you realise you are the pin and the hand that moves it.
Once in that place I had a full blown conversation with someone who by all reasoning I could muster was as equally as conscious as me. That was the first time I took mental note of the "90 seconds rule" I've come to assume.
Idk what that's all about, at a guess I'd say it's approaching the hypnopompic stage but not fully engaging. All the magic happens around those states so to speak.
I imagine it to be a organ/muscle the hypnagogic/hypnopompic stage, you can learn to flex it. It's possible to consciously exit and enter sleep so why not? Aren't we essentially postulating that sleep is a 6th sense occasionally?
