Maybe they took a liking to beef and is figuring out how to farm cows.
Jokes aside, getting water, crops, all the animal stuff sounds like a colony, or permeant station and not just some curios visitors. The water is just getting transported. It's used for boring everyday stuff. Who travels far to collect water?
