People (and particles) are ultimately made up of all of the smaller bits. The saying, "you are what you eat" is pretty well known, but you are what you hear, you are what you see. All of those reinforced patterns of electrons have an impact on the person as a whole.
In the same sense, if each person cleans up their own self, that is really the only way to fix the whole -- besides throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I have used the analogy that even if one particle in a bucket of black sand is exchanged for white, it is still cleaner even if it takes a lot of time to transform the whole thing, it is still worth doing and it is still progress.
The sense of despondence it pretty common nowadays and understandable. There are some really despicable things that come about when the environment becomes this corrupt -- some beyond imagination. What happens here is definitely a reflection of larger things. Whatever your way, stick to the good and upright path and you will get through it.
