What I did at the time was very simple "expert systems", in which you would create a set of rules so the system could answer questions in normal language, usually with more questions, until it reached a final answer.
As the rules were handmade they were, usually, limited to one topic, that's why they were called "expert systems", as they were supposed to act as "experts" in that subject.
With enough work it was possible (and easy, although slow) to create a big set of rules that could almost act like a real person.
