It may have been a joke but it was also art. One of my definitions of art (supported by my sister, herself an artist) is "something that has no other use except being targeted by our senses", in this case, watched.
Sometimes there's also what I call "unintended art", cases in which someone makes something and someone else sees it in a different way that makes it being interpreted as art.
