It seems to be the very definition of 'tragic.'
It would be difficult to truly understand the events that lead to the suicide. I think it would require a forensic analysis of the entire dialog chain, the state of depression of the teen, the surrounding environment, and the actual development of the teens 'virtual' relationship.
I might be inclined to simply consider this a case of someone not yet mature enough to gauge what the "AI" was... believing the virtualization to be a true "relationship" in defiance of reality.
It's one of the aspects of the marketing illusion the industry has embarked on... that AI's can be "people." I would have had less objections to that if they had used the term "virtual" intelligence (VI) instead. But people often 'choose' to believe the illusion with a passion and romance that belies reality. "Suspension of disbelief" can be toxic... truly.
