Yes, as a matter of fact, America has tried that. Very prominently too. It was known as the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. The legislation sunset (expired) in 2004.
During the time the ban was in place there was no measurable effect in the number of firearms related fatalities in the US. To the contrary, in fact, the numbers only went up.
And this brings up another point. And this is another obstacle to reasonable measures. Once passed, laws are seldom rescinded if they are not effective, and this is one of the largest objections to this type of legislation. The AWB had a sunset provision baked right into it, and even still there were federal actions to keep the ban in place once it had lapsed.
"Reasonable" and "common sense" are two-way streets.
