An SKS would be a poor choice of a rifle to use for a possible 500-700 yard shot but the SVD would fit the bill quite nicely.
I see that the local papers (and USA Today) are saying it was a SKS though.
Experts say Trump's would-be assassin had an SKS, not an AK-47. What's the difference? (msn.com)
I guess we need to wait till more solid information comes out. Either way we should be looking at where the rifle came from. I'm betting that it was sold out the back of some FBI guys car.
Yeah, but as I noted, no way would it be a Dragunov (SVD). You'd have to be crazy to switch out the stock on one of those! Even a copy is worth $10k, and the furniture on one of those things is absolutely beautiful. Plus, you can tell from the mag that it's the wrong caliber. An Dragunov is chambered in 7.62 x 54mmR which was the original cartridge for the Mosin-Nagant dating clear back to the 1800's. You can see in the picture that the mag isn't long enough for a 54mm cartridge, and it's too curved for that cartridge also. Plus the mags on the Dragunov were 10 round box mags.
On a personal note, I'd give my eye teeth for a genuine Dragunov! I'd love to own one of those things! I've got rifles which will shoot much further and way more accurately, but just the "Cool Factor" alone makes me want one. "Coolness" just drips off one of those things!
