Actually, the more I think about this...that WAS the notification I was hoping you'd get.  In essence you were notified that someone had mentioned you in a thread whereas you wouldn't have been otherwise notified without the tag.

No, the alert I got was the same I would get if you hadn't mentioned me or anyone else, it's just the normal notification that someone posted on a subscribed thread.
