Personally, this is not unexpected to me, and not just because of what has happened in the last 10 or 12 years.
Since I remember seeing the media talking about US elections (probably since Jimmy Carter's election, as before that I was too young and the Portuguese censorship didn't like to allow news about external politics), one thing I noticed was how much they would try to make the other side look bad instead of trying to show that they were better.
A couple of years latter some parties tried that method in Portugal, but it backfired, as the voters didn't like idea of bad-mouthing others instead of pointing their own positives.
The "Facebook syndrome" that makes people think that one "like" means they cannot be wrong only made things worse.
