Some people have become so fixated on their own points of view that they do not care about anything else or what methods are used as long as their point of view is the one that wins (or appears to win, as that's enough for some people).
An assassination attempt of any candidate for any election is always a loss for society, even if, like in this case, the assassination fails, because it shows that some people find it better to use violence than peaceful elections.
It's a loss because it shows that, somewhere along the way, society is failing to make people see how things should work (different sides presenting their ideas for discussion, the people choosing those they think will be better for the job, etc) and that violence should never be the answer in politics, even for those that do not like politics.
It's also a loss for society because it shows that people are losing their natural empathy with other human beings (unless they are psychopaths and do not have any empathy) and do not care about it, and one of the reasons this happens is because of the growing tendency of making political adversaries into enemies in the eyes of the followers, acting as if "the other side(s)" is not really made with human beings with the same natural needs and desires.
