I think egregores can be very useful.
They can be created in the dead of night in the barracks to haunt one's CO, so when one is asked the next day to report to the CO, there is a complete about-face and ones personal will is manifest rather than the will of one's 'superior' , a bit of incredulity and fear may also manifest.

The reports of ectoplasm seems real but weird. Maybe it was just regular old plasma like a orb, everything seems to be a fluid back then. Another state of matter.
