Edit Reason: Heroes!

In popular American culture? If you are American, that is.
I was wondering this because I was reading this Business Insider article from back in 2020:
Quote:In the clip, Moradi says:
"In your opinion, if anyone around the world wants to take their revenge on the assassination of Soleimani and intends to do it proportionately in the way they suggest — that we take one of theirs now that they've got one of ours — who should we consider to take out in the context of America?
"Think about it. Are we supposed to take out Spider-Man and SpongeBob? They don't have any heroes. We have a country in front of us with a large population and a large landmass, but it doesn't have any heroes. All of their heroes are cartoon characters — they're all fictional."
And thought, "dang, he's got a point", because I couldn't think of any. Maybe Sad Keanu Reeves? He seems like a good soul. But that is just a Hollywood person!
How about you?

I have no heroes in 'popular American culture'.
Real life people whom I admire ... Saint Peter, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Padre Pio, Father (Captain) Emil Joseph Kapaun, Mother Angelica, My Husband.
Also ArchBishop Vigano who is a 'prince of the church' and an outspoken critic of the New World Order and Pope Francis.
Anyone struggling with illness and hardship who keep on fighting and who don't succumb to despair or evil. They are inspirational. (I tend to get pissed off, and give in to self pity and discouragement)
People who try to put God first or at least try to figure out what is right and do it, and who try to do what is right even in the face of extreme hardship and ridicule and pressure from the 'spirit of the world'.
I don't have heroes. That's too big of a word. And people put on pedestals can fall. I do have people that I admire and who I find inspiration from. Everything from canonized saints to the people I've known who have fought through hardships ....

I guess by "in popular American culture" I meant people who pretty much everyone would know their name. Like some of the ones you mention!

This is very pretty! Yes, the heroes bring out the best in all of us! They do not get enough attention in the "popular culture".
Some people had Elon Musk as a hero, but then just as many people hate him now! Heroes make us look beyond the current conflicts and nastiness and give us hope. Like Rachel Maddow! Hahaha just kidding. We sure do seem to have a lot of "anti-heroes" though!

Dang... Why don't you ask me which is my favorite song...
The list of heroes for me has never stopped growing.
Every day, someone, somewhere does something amazing... something that I would nudge an alien from another planet and say "See? That's a human being!"
It the tiny things, and the big things... the accomplishments and the self-evident denial of "accomplishment's" relevance. The grandiose and outward, and the sublime and inward.
There is no hero... there are heroes. The distinction of choosing a hero to kill in a world with no singular heroes is... anyone will do. Anyone you kill becomes a hero.
They are structured socially in such a different way that they can believe that one man can carry all the honor which they should all share.
OK enough of that... Bugs Bunny ... no wait... Jesus.... no, you probably won't accept that,... My late wife... sad now....

The last one I can think of who got the "hero" treatment was Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who landed that plane on the Hudson. That was years ago. Then he wrote a book, right? I don't think he got deconstructed, he's probably doing speaking gigs now. And there's the occasional war guy who gets the hero pedestal -- brave heroes all -- but everyone else I'm thinking of is like an actor or something. There's a few reporters and journalists I like, who are heroes for refusing to shut up, but they are rather niche and I'll admit I probably only like them because I agree with them, usually.
Edit: hahaha I was right: https://www.sullysullenberger.com/speaking/
Edit again: Oh! I just thought of one! David Goggins. That guy has such inspirational strength of will! https://davidgoggins.com/

Oh ffs Max! You got to it before me again and hit it so eloquently…
My heroes are people that I know or knew. My Grandfather…
People who go way out of their way to save someone! Save a Dog, a dog that saves a family from a house fire! Someone who helps a drowning person.
Those are heroes.
I have been called a hero by patients, but I think if I’m being paid for this, then I’m definitely not a hero.
A politician? A media personality? Fuck no, that’s just them pandering.
Someone who goes above and beyond, putting their own interests aside to save someone’s life. Yes.
My 2 pesos…

ETA: ALL heroes have flaws, if they are human and honest, they are flawed.

And they're not really heros, they just do things (like play total psychos) that I really enjoy or are just really accomplished at what they do. They are inspiring for one reason of another. So "role models" would be closer. Crazy character models?
Like Kate Winslet. Apart from playing Clementine in Eternal Sunshine, she trained to hold her breath over 7 minutes for Avatar 2.
* After-the-fact non girl power list edit.
Hunter S. Thompson
Douglas Adams (never gave up on the White Rhino)
Harvey Milk (It took guts when he did it)
Carl Sagan
Lao Tzu, Buddha, and Jesus. All pretty much the same.
John McCain
Tony Gwynn (favorite ball player as a kid)
Trevor Hoffman (Go Padres & Wildcats!)
And so on in that fashion. Politicians, some activist people, writers, and sports heros.
