Why put your best up against a volatile candidate?
That is an excellent question. If that occurs, the Democrats will further undermine their argument that Trump represents an existential threat to democracy. (Never mind that the U.S. is a constitutional republic, not a parliamentary democracy.)
If those potential presidential candidates genuinely believe Trump is that dangerous, then one doesn't wait another four years to make a run for the White House. But I expect they don't believe in the MSNBC narrative and will likely make calculated political decisions.
A decent candidate could run a shorter parliamentary-style campaign to win back swing voters. But I don't envision that scenario occurring.

Indeed, that is one of my gravest concerns going forward for future presidents. Even if a president doesn't have significant character defects or health issues, they will have to wrestle the policy decision-making process back from the "deep state."
Since the bureaucracy shifted from advising the president to running the show, they are also in bed with propaganda outlets, such as MSNBC and others. Any president who attempts to assert their constitutional powers will face the subsequent Russia Gate hoax and phoney grounds for impeachment.
In light of this situation, countries like Australia and New Zealand, which rely on the so-called international rules-based order for security and trade, require a plan B. In particular, Australia is placing all their eggs into the Aukus basket.
