Seemingly healthy son in law has blood clots both lungs - putnam6 - 12-31-2023

Seemingly healthy son-in-law has blood clots in both lungs.

So my daughter and her husband flew down for Christmas to visit my ex and I for the holidays. My daughter calls on the 26th says SIL isn't feeling well, had been coughing etc. I told her that's OK just to stay at her Mom's till he felt better, we are about an hour away so it's not a just down road trip. Not to mention they didn't rent a car etc. it just seemed to be a better idea to give it a day. So the next day he isn't feeling better so I tell her to take him to the hospital, this is after asking the day before if it was bad enough to go to the doctor. They wound up just going the next day, to a crappy urgent care place, which said it was nothing, not pneumonia, the flu, COVID etc.

So they got back to my ex's and we got a car service to pick them up and take them to the airport they had a flight early in the morning that was Thursday. SO today I checked in with her and found out they are at the ER he is in some pain and at first said it was pneumonia and then later said he has blood clots on both lungs.

My daughter finally said he had been coughing for most of the month, he is practically a health nut, doesn't smoke or drink, eats healthy and is an amateur power lifter 29 years old.

It just really frustrated me that they didn't get it checked earlier and when they did they went to an Urgent Care place when an ER was just 10-15 minutes further.

Last I heard they are keeping him in the hospital for observation overnight, and it sounds like they will try medicines first. Getting all the information from her isn't easy...

Just want him and her to be OK, if they weren't 800 miles away Id be there at the hospital with her right now, Feeling bad I wasn't more insistent on them going to the hospital. But hell just checked my texts to her and I said go to a doctor over a dozen times.

Just frustrating as a concerned parent...

I hope he starts to feel and get better really soon Putnam.
They'll probably put him on blood thinners and keep him in for observation and rest and he'll be home in a few days.

They will put him on blood thinners like Warfarin which will most likely tackle the issue.

That is no fun. When I had Pnemonia they said I had blood clots, and put me on something... then they just went away. So hopefully that will be the case with your son in law. Sending him healing vibes/prayers though!

Thanks for the replies

Yep just talked to my daughter they have options, putting him on Eliquis and giving her a number for assistance since he is uninsured.

They just got married in May she sounds like she is holding up well, her husband's family are good people and they made it to the hospital for emotional support.

LOL she will be fine, its just a Dad daughter thing.

I woke up at 4 am and my first instinct was I got to fly up there. But they got this, we will know more after they meet with a specialist in a couple of weeks and see if he is progressing

Sending lots of mojo!  I have a friend who was recently hospitalized with the same thing (hers had gotten so bad that she also had fluid around the heart.)  She's out now and in rehab, so I hope your SIL is quickly back to his old routines.

You're a good dad for fussing over them.  :)

I used to think that blood clots were just for old people.  I've recently found out that's not true.  Scary stuff!  Hope all works out well.

Yeah, fluid around the heart can end up causing heart failure and future problems. but is sounds like this has been caught very early so the blood thinners should clear it up, the next step could be ultra sound.

They are good kids, LOL I call them kids but they are full-fledged adults. They visit regularly and they both seem good for each other. We are blessed with really good offspring like my Dad (RIP) used to say about his grandkids, it must have skipped a generation...

Was able to speak with her a bit more and she sounds as if they are on top of it. He looked wiped out, but up and moving around well and eating and getting fluids

Their doctor said they see this a good bit in the area lately, along with pneumonia makes it particularly nasty. It just sounds ominous and we have a family of smokers and none of them have had lung issues so far, and definitely not blood clots. LOL, the absence of complete knowledge of the situation makes you wonder.

It's like I told her, she's got to remember she has told us how much she loves and cares for him for 6 years and we love her very much, so we now have complete love and care for Johnny as well. LOL Ive lived with her I know it isn't easy, so there is a level of growing respect too. Sort of like when we adopted our cat when she was a kid, she loved the cat thus by transitive feelings I loved and cared for Bob the cat or Care Bear or Larry. I told her to just try and keep this situation to one cat.

All new feelings for this 59-year-old man...

So sorry your son in law is going through this. Sounds like things are looking up for him though.
