• I saw vulnerable indigenous children from Guatemala who speak Mayan dialects and can’t speak Spanish. That means they can’t ask for help in English and they can’t ask for help in Spanish. These children become captive to their Sponsors.
• I’ve sat with Case Managers as they cried retelling horrific things that were done to children on the journey.
• I saw apartment buildings where 20, 30 & 40 unaccompanied children have been released.
• I saw sponsors trying to simultaneously sponsor children from multiple ORR sites.
• I saw sponsors using multiple addresses to obtain sponsorships of children.
• I saw numerous cases of children in debt bondage and the child knew they had to stay with the sponsor until the debt was paid.

This is a particularly troubling topic for me.
I am one of those who represses commentary when the subject of slavery comes up in social circles... it is most often coming up in reference to local, current social-sensitivities about race, and a fixation on "how people were hurt by slavery" in the past...
But I am dismayed and frankly, disappointed, by the general refusal to acknowledge that there are more slaves now than there have ever been in the past... how half of them are sexual-service slaves... and most of them are technically children. (And also how most of them are part of a black market deeply ensconced within enlightened societies.)
This is a very sad topic...
Most of the anger I see comes from those entrenched in fighting other 'social ills'... and many are angry at the 'distraction' from what other 'thing' they have chosen as "important."
The reason it is not a focus of our media is not a mystery if you think about the cabal 'membership' of the media in general.

snip quote to mention those phrases paint two images of slavery, chains-n-cotton and mk-island-elite, that while of course horrible and important, also do a disservice to papering over the very widespread problem of debt bondage enforced on immigrants by language and social isolation that ms rodas refers to. that is slavery too. much more pernicious in that it is a shadow economy that americans seem willing to tolerate, day labor farming, landscaping, the maid at your hotel who doesn't speak english and has her children helping her that day because she "can't afford child care", the skeevy strip clubs, massage shacks, and escort businesses, that's american culture, no one in power seems to want to change it unless it gets too close to their gated communities, and the general public is typical american colonialist hypocrites about it, after all everyone has urges and who wants to pay more for lawncare, amirite? bah. its a shadow economy, and it is fueled by vice and lust and greed and the kind of cultural elitism that even rednecks and the ivypreps seem to agree on.
