Happy Canadian Thanksgiving ! - Tecate - 10-14-2024

Happy Thanksgiving my fellow Canadians!

Thanksgiving in Canada has been celebrated in Canada since November 6, 1879, but wasn’t officially observed as being on the second Monday in October until January 31, 1957.

The reasoning for the timing is essentially because of the earlier harvest in the northern hemisphere. It therefore corresponds with British and European harvest festivals, and is a traditional time for gathering with friends and family to celebrate and enjoy the bounty of the season.

It’s food, fun and football!

Enjoy and save room for the pie!!

Enjoy!   My wishes for such gatherings are always that family make an extra efford to behave themselves.  Worse than a dog stealing the main course is the stain of family squabbles on days where they have all gathered together.

That said, Food, Fun and Football ROCK!!

I always wondered.   Being of an older age, I remember in my house that Thanksgiving (American Thanks giving) there was always an air of reverence about Thanksgiving... we even went to Mass...  So it always had an air of "holiday." Not that the reverence cured family dynamics (good or bad)... but still, that feeling was present in me... acknowledging my gratitude (especially in family) was the overall sense of it...

I knew many other families where it seemed more of a simple "day off" and the only thing worthy about it was football... and beer.

How is it received in Canada?  Is there a great "family gathering" thing there, or is it different?

Remember, it's about family, not cheese curds and hot maple syrup.

Heed this wisdom.  Words to live by.

It is definitely a family gathering holiday. Today is the actual holiday, but most families will get together for a big meal on the Sunday.

Turkey, ham, or roast beef with all the fall harvest vegetables and pumpkin pie. The usual. Of course we hope that there’s no squabbles and such, but family…

Our family doesn’t go to church for this holiday, but we do all say what we’re thankful for. (Sometimes this in fact is what causes the squabbles! Ha!).

Anyhow I can only speak to what our family does.

Enjoy!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, Tecate, and all our Canadian friends.

I lived in Vancouver for five years, but never got the chance to celebrate a proper Thanksgiving celebration with anyone; most of my acquaintances were Oriental and did not celebrate. However, I had some Canadian friends in Steamworks pub, near Canada Place, and they provided some form of tradition to my lunch breaks..., and lots of quality beer.
