Your picks reminded me of: Gangs of New York AND Lincoln. Both Daniel-Day Lewis centric. He is such an amazing actor. Of course, Gangs of New York reminds me of another favorite: No Country for Old Men. My definition of an epic is - intro music, an intermission, and almost 4 hours in total. They don’t make them anymore because they make more cash off of sequels. RE: What do you think are the best movies ever made? - Maxmars - 10-16-2024 I can never get into these kinds of thing as much as I'd like because the more I think about it the more the list changes. I can't ever seem to resolve what makes a movie epic (although it's never 'box-office' stats) The classics deserve their own list, as the entire production was a completely different animal than it is now. Classics like: The Ten Commandments, Spartacus, Ben Hur, are dissimilar to Seven Days in May, Fail Safe, Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf, Rashomon, Seven Samurai in more than just color film. But there are "newer" classics that can't compare with them at all... and each genre deserves its own judgment... There are different expectations across the board... it's too hard for me to choose... RE: What do you think are the best movies ever made? - Tecate - 10-16-2024 Yeah Max I was thinking about this today at work too. All these other movies I wanted to add, then realized that it would never end! But then I also realized that the older I get the more I enjoy comedy films and yet a couple times a year I’ll sit and watch LOTR trilogy and then some other genre. He’ll I can’t even stick to one! Ha! Tecate RE: What do you think are the best movies ever made? - FlyersFan - 10-17-2024 (10-16-2024, 04:34 PM)KKLoco Wrote: I wasn’t saying any of the last 3 were epics. It just does remakes of good movies, making crap and trying to sell them as 'new and improved'. And they make woke social engineering message movies that ruin what could have been good stories. Lots of junk. Some stuff comes out that is good ... like 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' was excellent. But it's not 'classic' material like the old days of Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments and that kind of thing. RE: What do you think are the best movies ever made? - KrustyKrab - 10-17-2024 That’s a tough one I wouldn’t call all of these the best ever made but they’re some of my favorites Ten Commandments Schindler’s List Forrest Gump The Wizard of Oz Planet of the Apes Hook Little Big Man The Jerk Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid The Deer Hunter The Godfather Ben Hur Amadeus Apocalypse Now Rain Man Shawshank Back to the Future The Birds It’s a Wonderful life One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Saving Private Ryan Jaws Goodness this is next to impossible. I could just keep going and going and going…… RE: What do you think are the best movies ever made? - Kurokage - 10-17-2024 Like others have said, it's near impossible to post one particular movie, as the type of film changes with mood and nostalgia. I agree with about 90% of what other posters have listed. I'm big Sci-fi movie fan so 'Forbidden Planet' is up there at the top, along with the more recent Alien and it's sequel Aliens. Always been a Star Wars fan, and 'The Empire Strikes Back' has always been my pick from the original trilogy. Saw the first 'Superman' movie as a 7/8 year old, so will always have a soft spot for that. Christopher Revee will always be Superman. I also enjoy a good scare, so The 'Exorcist' and 'Exorcist 3' are a great watch (Exorcist 3 still has the best jump scare in my opinion), and really enjoyed the original 'Hellraiser', the character Pinhead having some great lines. You can't go wrong with the Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee movies for nostalgia reasons, as these terrified me as a child. I could go on and on........ I also forgot from my childhood the Disney animated film 'The Sword In The Stone' RE: What do you think are the best movies ever made? - Chiefsmom - 10-17-2024 There are a lot of great ones listed already, Shawshank and the Green Mile being at the top of my list. For me, it is being able to watch a movie for the 101st time, and still being able to just get "lost" in the movie. I would add Signs. Love how it isn't big budget aliens. Just average everyday people trying to deal. And 13th Warrior. Not sure why. Just love that movie! |
