The Mothman

I'm doing this off the cuff based partly on recollection, but I recall this as being another one of those good video binges although it's been quite a few years for this one.

I suppose it made enough of an impression on someone in Hollywood with enough of a budget to make a movie about it, and it wasn't cheap either. The movie(The Mothman Prophecies) starred Richard Gere and maybe a couple of other well knowns. I think the movie was okay and I'd recommend it.

This phenomenon occurred in Point Pleasant West Virginia during the years of '66 and '67 regarding a very large bird-like humanoid cryptid. This creature was said to be all black with glowing red eyes, and some were estimating this creature to be around 9' tall. I recall one observer that saw the creature standing beneath a tree branch with little to no clearance which later yielded a fairly accurate measurement of the aforementioned 9'.

The movie title was blazoned due to the prophetic nature of the sightings correlating with disastrous events like the collapse of the Silver Bridge which resulted in the deaths of 46 people, and some also say it was a prelude to the 1999 Russian apartment bombings.

For someone who likes this sort of thing and hasn't seen the movie and blasted through all of the YouTube vids yet like me.

Great thread and very freaky series of incidents (movie is here if you want to watch it).

Am a fan of Keel but always found it interesting he initially went to Point Pleasant (Mothman Central) in order to investigate a huge UFO flap in the area.

Crazy stuff lol.

Quote:• "There was an outbreak of UFO sightings in that whole area from Point Pleasant up around 35 almost all the way to Charleston - and they would all start by saying 'I know you think I'm crazy but..'

They would tell me these stories about the sightings they had on their land. Now usually it would involve some sort of machine like a UFO. It got so bad we basically had a special assignment desk for when people called to report the UFOs."

News Journalist David Payton, Huntington Herald Dispatch, West Virginia, November, 1966.

Were you following the alleged mothman/flying humanoid reports from IL a few years back?.

One link below, but it had a lot of reports around then.

Cool story!

I have an idea and when I get the time would like to share my views.

Has anyone watched The Mothman Prophecies?

I really think there is a lot to mothman and it doesn't get the attention that it should.

The Mothman Prophecies is such an underrated movie. Sure it drifts from the alleged real story, but it hits on a lot of points too.

So many other reports of encounters over the years...

Traveled into West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia a lot over the years so many weird mountain stories, and relatives in the area say the mountains have a way of making you forget, and then it bites you on the ass again.

Here's one I recall reading about ....

https://www.ranker.com/list/true-mothman-stories/lyra-radford

Quote:The first of a series of strange sightings actually took place about 85 miles away from Point Pleasant in Clendenin, WV. Five grave diggers heard a rustling in the trees overhead and looked up to find what they claimed was a flying man directly above them.
Over the next few days, more reports started trickling in. Two volunteer firemen described a "large bird with red eyes." At least a hundred reports from people of all ages circulated throughout Point Pleasant between November 1966 and December 1967, describing a monster that was able to ascend straight up into the air “like a helicopter.” All of the witnesses described the same bird-man with glowing, hypnotic red eyes and the wings of a bat.
Mary Hyre, a reporter at the time of the Mothman sightings, received over 500 phone calls, not only about this mysterious creature, but also strange lights in the sky, electrical interference, mysterious humming sounds, and UFO sightings. Then, on December 15, 1967, a year after the Mothman sightings began, tragedy struck. During rush hour traffic, the Silver Bridge collapsed, 46 people died, and the Mothman disappeared.

Two Young Couples Were Reportedly Chased Down Route 62 By The MothmanOn November 15, 1966, two couples (Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette) were driving past a TNT plant when they saw a humanoid figure with glowing red eyes. Linda described what they saw on the side of the road as a bird-like humanoid creature with a large wingspan and fiery red eyes. She said it was about 7 feet tall, its wings folded against its back. "You could see muscles in its legs" she recalled.
The creature followed them as they drove back towards Point Pleasant on Route 62, then it veered off into the fields and disappeared. The group went straight to the Mason County Police Department to share the terrifying account, which soon made its way into local papers.
"I wish we had never seen it, I wish someone else had seen it," Linda Scarberry said later.

That's a great link, thanks for sharing that one. Beer

Thought this conversation with Steve Ward was a good one and he mentions how (as well as Mothman and UFOs) there were also animal mutes and poltergeist phenomena reported.

Many times I’ve seen this movie. I bought it due to my fascination with this subject.

Mothman was claimed to have been spotted in 1986 before the Chernobyl incident by workers there.

It is claimed that Mothman sightings are a harbinger of doom.

This is what I have heard too.
Mothman is supposed to be bringing some bad news or a warning that something bad will happen. A fascinating story indeed.

We need to find out which parts of the story are true. Point Pleasant was the place where Mothman became famous for what it is.

Another interesting aspect of this story is Woodrow Derenbergers’ claim of meeting and speaking with Indrid Cold (The grinning Man), his family members later claimed to have seen Indrid Cold as well.

Woodrow received such unwanted notoriety about Indrid Cold that he moved away from the area for some years. He later returned and passed in his 70s. It affected his life badly.
