Slaves may have been captured here in the Western Hemisphere and sold to the Ottomans. Perhaps it's why some Southerners used to call themselves "Utman." There was even a hit song in 1958 called "Utman, Utman." It is the Arabic word for Ottoman. Perhaps because they were trafficking white slaves to the Ottomans via the Barbary pirates, who didn't speak Turkish but Arabic?
