While 100% effective, sensory depravation, psychedelics and ritualized magic isn't everyone's cup of tea or even that easy to engage in. This is the guide for the person that is curious or has tried and failed without resorting to exotic methods, zero assists needed.
Step 1
Lie down on your back. Time should not be of consideration, if you need to be or do something within in hour don't bother. Set an alarm (terribly experience when it goes off, it will be a shock ).
Step 2.
Tense and relax every muscle group that you have in succession. Start with one foot and the toes. Tense up for a couple of seconds, then relax and really focused on what just happened.
Do the other foot. Do the calves next, then upper legs. Continue through your whole body and finally finish by pulling silly faces
Step 3.
That's it.
"Wait what?" Here is the secret: focus. The mind cannot be still, consciousness is the light that always wanders. Accept it, embrace it, learn to control it. - Breathe, box breath. Inhale for 4 seconds > Hold breath for 4 seconds > exhale for 4 seconds > be still for 4 seconds > inhale for 4 seconds.
- the amount of seconds doesn't really mater, whatever you are comfortable with.
- You will start noticing a vibration that starts in your feet and moves up your body.
- You will start hearing a humming or a buzzing, it might sound electric.
No results? Start with "remote viewing", "look" at yourself....don't force it...if it helps start with seeing
- shape
- texture
- dimension
- color

I'm curious as to the purpose of this exercise. What is to be gained?
I assume you have experience as you are offering guidance so what have you gained?
I can't think of a single thing. Is the purpose just to meaninglessly float around?

Not really sure I understand? I guess you could float around.
I have many experiences, good and bad. Currently I'm interested in megalithic sites and their origin, stuck actually. Some kind of large presence as soon as the stones comes into focus...I don't think I went to the right place due to taking shortcuts.

How would an OBE tell you anything about the origin of megalithic stones? I cant see how that would work unless it involves time travel.
When I ask what you have gained, I am asking what is the point? Do you have anything worthwhile to recount? Have you gained any wisdom?

This is actually a good exercise for muscle relaxation, especially if you are having trouble sleeping. To get to sleep quickly, a special forces trick is to end it with closing your eyes, taking a few deep measured breaths, curling on your side, and focusing on the feeling in your face while relaxing. For some reason, you can drift right off.
For actually meditating, try doing this in a seated posture, combined with breath exercises, and with eyes half-closed, perhaps focusing on the tip of your nose.
Don't forget to open your third nostril! The true path to the journey of illumination.

I took mushrooms 20 years ago! I watched myself in front of a mirror for 5 hours!
All I know is that my mind floated but I never moved away from the mirror!
Never again! Lol

On a serious note UltraBudgie has got it right, it's a well known technique to help you sleep and relax or get started in a mediative state.

Midcon, I'm an avid Lucid Dreamer and have also had my share of OBE's. Whether or not its all in the mind there are definitely things to be gained. I have had deeply profound experiences that have changed the way I see the world and myself. I've also had the silly floating around experiences which were still quite interesting and enjoyable. I don't intend to detail any of my more meaningful OBEs here simply because they are personal experiences and what I find meaningful you may not. I will say that in general you can use OBEs to accelerate healing (emotionally, spiritually and even physically) you can seek guidance, confront and overcome fear and trauma or just explore the astral plane which in itself can become a learning experience if you're open to it.
The cool thing is whether you believe your soul is leaving your body and traveling to other realms or that its all just a product of the mind, you can benefit from the experiences just the same. That said, I realize its not everyone's cup of tea. It takes some time and practice for most people to be able to do it and there are plenty of other ways to explore self and seek guidance and healing- such as meditation, therapy and psychedelics. I have personally not been able to do any lucid dreaming or OBEs since my husband's death back in May of this year. I just can't get in the mind set even for a simple meditation. I've been working with a grief counselor and doing microdosing both of which I've found to be helpful. When I'm ready, I'll get back into it and hopefully I'll be able to see my partner again and find some much needed closure that no amount of counseling could really provide.
Maybe this isn't the right thing for you and that's perfectly okay. If you really are curious about it and what benefits you can get out of it, I'd recommend giving it a try. It certainly couldn't hurt and you might even be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

I won't get into the time or space thing. You are just deflecting.
The point is that you aren't leaving your body.
Something might be gained in such subjective experiences though. That's why I ask.
For the most part the whole idea falls into the woo department where the asral planers live.
